Windows 8: Through the Looking Glass

3/5 stars

Windows 8 touches some of the right places

Review by Alex Cole.

Published 31 August 2012

It?s been said that the age of the PC is already over, and that the laptops rolling out now are just the last gasp of what will become specialised tools for professionals. Most of us will move on to tablets and mobiles, which already do all the Facebooking and Tweeting for us anyway.?The basics of Windows haven?t really changed since the first few releases ? menu bar, movable windows, and programs and settings all thrown together in a heap. It?s grown more complex than that over the years, of course, cleaned up a bit, but basically the same deal. Keeping that kind of continuity has been what keeps people from generally complaining too much when there?s a new version. So throwing that to one side and introducing a new interface like Metro with the upcoming Windows 8 is, in a word, an adjustment.

Metro is a new design philosophy for Windows, one that seems designed for touching, gestures and swiping, which makes it very much the kind of thing that makes sense on the tablet and somewhat less on a laptop, especially when the screen isn?t touchable. It is well put together, but relies on gestures to trigger multi-tasking, full-screen, custom designed apps, and centralised locations for settings rather than menu bars for each window. There?s definitely a sense of integration and control, but in many cases the shift is radical enough to change your workflow entirely, so the learning curve isn?t quite as friendly as it could be.

It?s worth noting that you can do away with Metro entirely and go back to the Windows you know already, and avoid the whole issue. Elaborate programs like Photoshop still live in that desktop environment and work just the same way. You can treat Metro like a glorified app drawer and leave it at that. But Windows is pretty eager for new users for to try its new tricks and work with them, and almost certainly banking on touchscreens coming to a laptop near you soon.

Ultimately, Windows 8 feels good, but not a little strange, not unlike how Vista felt just a few years ago. There are enough changes in places that it?s likely that a good portion of the new features won?t get used enough to support after a while. It?s cheap enough that an upgrade won?t break the bank, but it?s probably different enough that you don?t need to be in any hurry to get it.

India quarterly growth seen as worst in three years

India is expected Friday to announce its worst quarterly economic growth figures in three years, with economists saying there is scant hope for a swift turnaround in Asia's third-biggest economy.

India, which once aspired to double-digit expansion, has been hit hard by declining investor confidence, subdued demand and prolonged political logjam that has stalled key reforms.

"The current slowdown is broad-based, and we see little on the horizon to lift growth from its current path," said Glenn Levine, senior economist at Moody's Analytics.

Levine expects growth of 5.2 percent for the first financial quarter of 2012-13, a shade lower than the consensus market forecast of 5.3 percent.

The figures for the three months to June, set to be announced at 0530 GMT, were expected to deepen the gloom surrounding the Asian giant.

The projected expansion would be the weakest since the last fiscal quarter of 2008-09 when the economy logged 3.5 percent growth.

While five percent-plus expansion would be hailed as strong in Western nations, Indian policymakers say the country needs double-digit growth to create jobs for hundreds of millions of young workers.

The government -- damaged by a series of corruption scandals -- is struggling to introduce economic reforms in parliament that are seen as key to spurring the economy.

But the legislature has been deadlocked by opposition demands for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to quit over an alleged government giveaway of billions of dollars in coal mining rights to private firms.

India's once booming industrial sector is in crisis, with output contracting by a shock 1.8 percent in June. Overseas investor confidence has also tumbled, as shown by figures for foreign direct investment for the quarter to June, which slid year-on-year by 67 percent to $4.43 billion.

It remains "unclear what the government can do in the next three to six months" to improve the situation, said Siddhartha Sanyal, chief India economist at Barclays Capital.

Global rating agencies have lowered their outlook on India's investment-grade rating amid rising worries about the government's deteriorating finances.

The Reserve Bank of India has also warned that prospects are unlikely to improve in the near-term, due to high inflation, the lack of reforms and the impact of weak monsoon rains on farm output.

While other banks globally have been easing rates to revive their troubled economies, India's policymakers have kept borrowing costs on hold since April -- when it cut them for the first time in three years by 50 basis points.

Business leaders and industry have been clamouring for coordinated action by the government and the central bank to stimulate growth.

But the government has no fiscal room to spur the economy and the bank says a cut in subsidies to close India's gaping deficit and revival of reforms are needed to remove chronic bottlenecks and pave the way for lower rates.

India's economy is expected to grow by 6.7 percent in this fiscal year, according to a forecast by an advisory panel to the prime minister, but many economists say that is overly optimistic.

"The mood is downbeat and people have no hope left from the government," said Jigar Shah, head of research at Kim Eng Securities.

"The only positive (aspect) is that things possibly cannot get worse."

We take a look at the design language of Sony's new Arc family

At its IFA press conference, Sony Mobile launched four new Xperia smartphones -- Xperia T, Xperia TX, Xperia J and Xperia V. The announcement came just six months after the Xperia NXT series made its European debut, and saw Sony presenting two distinctly different families of devices within the same year. From the Xperia TX at the high-end to the Xperia J at entry-level, all four devices channel the design of a phone for which we still have something of a soft spot -- the Xperia Arc. And at a meeting at IFA 2012 in Berlin, we had the chance to learn more about this dramatic change in design direction.

Kim Kardashian or Kris Humphries: Who's to Blame for Divorce Drama?

It's incredible, ridiculous and disgusting: Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries are STILL not divorced.

Yes, readers, these multi-millionaires continue to battle it out in court, with Humphries reportedly pressing for an annulment and attempting to prove Kardashian duped him into a doomed union; and Kim responding that her ex is simply petty and fame-hungry.

But while Team Kardashian has claimed its client has been pushing for a speedy legal split all along, an insider tells Radar that the reality star is stalling the process.

Kim Kardashian Motivational Poster

"Scheduling depositions for Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner [has] been problematic, as both claim very chaotic schedules," says the source. "Kris has a right to prepare for trial, and the longer the Kardashian clan drag their feet in scheduling depositions, the longer this thing is going to go on. It's worth noting that Kris' deposition was completed almost two months ago."

In other words: if Kim wants this divorce to take place, why isn't she taking any proactive steps to make it happen? Why not just schedule her deposition?

Granted, she's been really busy these days posting important Twitter photos.

"Kris just wants the truth to come out and is dedicated to seeing this thing through," adds the mole. "He is in no rush and Kim's camp's threats of releasing hidden footage that makes him look bad and other absurd claims don't deter him."

Yes, both these people absolutely suck. But one shoulders more blame than the other for dragging out this drama. At whom do you point the finger?

Hurricane Isaac makes landfall in La.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Hurricane Isaac raked the Louisiana coast and headed for a shuttered New Orleans late Tuesday, with brutal timing that made up for much of what it lacked in punch.

Just hours shy of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Isaac's approach left deserted streets from New Orleans' famous French Quarter to Tampa 480 miles away, where Republican conventioneers pressed on with only a passing mention of the storm's arrival.

A Category 1 hurricane with winds at 80 mph, Isaac came ashore at 6:45 p.m. CDT near the mouth of the Mississippi River in southeastern Louisiana, drenching a sparsely populated neck of land that stretches into the Gulf of Mexico. But the worst was still to come as it zeroed in on New Orleans, 75 miles to the northwest.

At midnight Tuesday, the hurricane had slowed to a forward speed of 7 mph. It was forecast to slow even further over the next day or two as it drifts over the southeastern coast of Louisiana before heading inland, according to an advisory from the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

While much less powerful than Katrina in 2005, Isaac unleashed fierce winds and soaking rains that knocked out power to more than 100,000 homes and businesses.

The storm drew intense scrutiny because of its timing ? just before the anniversary of the hurricane that devastated that city, while the first major speeches of the Republican National Convention went on in Tampa, Fla., already delayed and tempered by the storm.

While many residents stayed put, evacuations were ordered in low-lying areas of Louisiana and Mississippi, where officials closed 12 shorefront casinos.

One of the main concerns along the shoreline was storm surge, which occurs when hurricane winds raise sea levels off the coast, causing flooding on land.

A storm surge of 10.3 feet was reported at Shell Beach, Louisiana late Tuesday while a surge of 6.7 feet was reported in Waveland, Mississippi, the Hurricane Center said.

Ed Rappaport, the center's deputy director, said Isaac's core would pass west of New Orleans with winds close to 80 mph and head for Baton Rouge.

"On this course, the hurricane will gradually weaken," Rappaport said. He said gusts could reach about 100 mph at times, especially at higher levels, which could damage high-rise buildings in New Orleans.

As Isaac neared the city, there was little fear or panic. With New Orleans' airport closed, tourists retreated to hotels and most denizens of a coastline that has witnessed countless hurricanes decided to ride out the storm.

"Isaac is the son of Abraham," said Margaret Thomas, who was trapped for a week in her home in New Orleans' Broadmoor neighborhood by Katrina's floodwaters, yet chose to stay put this time. "It's a special name that means 'God will protect us'."

Officials, chastened by memories and experience, advised caution.

"We don't expect a Katrina-like event, but remember there are things about a Category 1 storm that can kill you," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said, urging people to use common sense and to stay off any streets that may flood.

Tens of thousands of people were told to leave low-lying areas, including 700 patients of Louisiana nursing homes, but officials decided not to call for mass evacuations like those that preceded Katrina, which packed 135 mph winds in 2005.

Isaac also promised to test a New Orleans levee system bolstered after the catastrophic failures during Hurricane Katrina. But in a city that has already weathered Hurricane Gustav in 2008, calm prevailed.

"I feel safe," said Pamela Young, who settled in to her home in the Lower 9th Ward ? a neighborhood devastated by Katrina ? with dog Princess and her television. "Everybody's talking 'going, going,' but the thing is, when you go, there's no telling what will happen. The storm isn't going to just hit here."

Young, who lives in a new, two-story home built to replace the one destroyed by Katrina, said she wasn't worried about the levees.

"If the wind isn't too rough, I can stay right here," she said, tapping on her wooden living room coffee table. "If the water comes up, I can go upstairs."

While far less powerful than Katrina, Isaac posed similar political challenges, a reminder of how the storm seven years ago became a symbol of government ignorance and ineptitude.

Political fallout was already simmering. Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, who canceled his trip to the convention, said the Obama administration's disaster declaration fell short of the federal help he had requested, and asked for a promise to be reimbursed for storm preparation costs.

"We learned from past experiences, you can't just wait. You've got to push the federal bureaucracy," Jindal said.

FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said such requests would be addressed after the storm.

Obama promised that Americans will help each other recover, "no matter what this storm brings."

"When disaster strikes, we're not Democrats or Republicans first, we are Americans first," Obama said at a campaign rally at Iowa State University. "We're one family. We help our neighbors in need."

In Tampa, the storm's landfall did not appear to affect prime-time coverage or the Republican National Convention speeches. One of the few mentions of the storm came in the opening remarks by Ann Romney, wife of the Republican nominee.

"Just so you all know, the hurricane has hit landfall and I think we should take this moment and recognize that fellow Americans are in its path and just hope and pray that all remain safe and no life is lost and no property is lost," she told the crowd.

Outside, though, the streets of downtown Tampa were eerily deserted, a result of nasty weather from Isaac's outer bands, tight securities that blocked off streets and a delay in convention events because of fears the storm might target that side of the Gulf.

While politicians from both parties were careful to show their concern for those in the storm's path, Gulf residents and visitors tried to make the best of the situation on the ground.

In New Orleans' French Quarter, Hyatt hotel employee Nazareth Joseph braced for a busy week and fat overtime paychecks. Joseph said he was trapped in the city for several days after Katrina and helped neighbors escape the floodwaters.

"We made it through Katrina; we can definitely make it through this. It's going to take a lot more to run me. I know how to survive," he said.

Maureen McDonald of Long Beach, Ind., strolled the French Quarter on her 80th birthday wearing a poncho, accompanied by family who traveled from three different cities to meet her in New Orleans to celebrate.

"The storm hasn't slowed us down. We're having the best time," she said.

But farther east along the Gulf, veterans of past hurricanes made sure to take precautions.

At a highway rest stop along Alabama's I-10, Bonnie Schertler, 54, of Waveland, Miss., said she left her coastal home for her father's place in Alabama "because of the 'coulds.'"

"I just feel like the storm may stay for a few days and that wind might just pound and pound and pound and pound," said Schertler, whose former home in Waveland was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. A slow storm is more dangerous, she said, "'cause it can knock down just virtually everything if it just hovers forever."

Local officials, who imposed curfews in Mississippi's Harrison, Hancock and Jackson counties. And in Theodore, Ala., 148 people took refuge in a shelter at the town's high school by midday Tuesday, with minds focused as much on the past as on the present storm.

Charlotte McCrary, 41, at the shelter with husband, Bryan, and their two sons, 3-year-old Tristan and 1-year-old Gabriel, recalled the year she spent living in a FEMA trailer after Katrina destroyed her home.

Seven years later, the storm reminds her that she still hasn't gotten back to same place.

"I think what it is," Bryan McCrary said, "is it brings back a lot of bad memories."

Is Your Child Sacrificing Their Health For An Education At School ...

From The Wall Street Journal?..

Fresh Healthy Vending, the leading healthy vending machine company in the United States, is challenging parents to demand fresher, healthier choices and to investigate the politics behind how the food choices are made in their children?s schools.

According to a Pediatrics Digest survey, almost half of all public elementary schools and about 80 percent of public high schools operated under ?pouring rights? contracts, meaning schools were signing exclusivity contracts with soda makers to receive funds to subsidize school lunch budgets and other aspects of schooling. While the schools receive additional funds to support their initiatives, the contracts come at another cost: students? health.

A study by the University of Illinois researchers found that students in states that limit in-school junk food sales gained an average of 0.44 fewer body mass index units (about 2.25 fewer pounds) than students in states with no policies.

?The rate of childhood obesity is considered to be triple what it was a generation ago, and a part of it is due to the accessibility of junk food to children,? said Dan Negroni, CEO of Fresh Healthy Vending. ?Schools that offer junky snack food and sugary sodas to our students are a part of the problem. Our mission is to be a part of the solution in fighting childhood obesity by offering fresh, healthy snack and beverage options to students. We are also challenging parents to be a part of the solution by demanding healthy choices for their children at schools.?

Fresh Healthy Vending touts its vending products as a means to keep minds and bodies in better shape. Their mission is to help eliminate junk food, which is associated with causing obesity, higher absenteeism and higher medical insurance rates.

?It?s disappointing to see students being marketed to with less-than-healthy choices while they are at school, but we?re optimistic that giving students the options and education on food can help,? said Negroni. ?We know that students and parents understand the importance of healthy eating, and it?s our mission to provide healthier options.?

Chris Christie Is 'Ready' For Keynote

Chris Christie is set to deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Convention tonight. But he'll have one eye on Isaac, which could make landfall just before the New Jersey governor takes the podium.

"We're all obviously looking very closely at what's going to be happening in the gulf. And our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and hope that any damage that may happen will be minimal and there will be no loss of life," he told me on GMA.

Despite the threatening storm Christie said his speech "has pretty much stayed the way it was intended to be."

Party faithful are expecting a fire and brimstone address from the governor, but Christie wouldn't say if that's what they'll get.

"I'll be talking about the New Jersey experience and what that means for the country, what it can mean and promise for the country. They'll be some other stuff I'll be talking about too. But I'll be ready when I walk out on that stage tonight," he said.

"I think that if the American people watch tonight and leave the speech by saying, 'Yup, that's him, that's who I've heard about. He seems genuine to me,' then think I will have done my job for me and if they say I like the vision he's laid out for the country and for his party for the next four years, then I will have done the job for my party and my country," he said.

Christie had a tip for Mitt Romney when he takes the stage Thursday: open up to the American people.

"I've always said this George?Mitt Romney is going to have to win this campaign. And to do that over the next 70 days he's going to have to let the American people see who he is, put out a bold vision for the future. Remember, he's a challenger?Challengers always get a late look," he said.

Over the weekend Mitt Romney repeated the famous Popeye quote "I am who I am" in several interviews, implying that perhaps he wouldn't show more of his personal side this week.

Christie disagrees, and credits Rep. Paul Ryan for already bringing out a new side of the presidential candidate.

"I think you've seen [Romney] show a lot more of himself even since Paul Ryan has joined the ticket. I think Paul has brought energy to the ticket and he's brought great energy to Governor Romney after a long and arduous campaign. So I think that the American people are going to see a lot more of him and they're going to start seeing it tonight with Mrs. Romney," he said. "Who no one can speak better or more articulately about the man that Mitt Romney is and the leader he'd be for our country than Ann Romney so I think the fun starts tonight, George, and I think the American people are going to start to get a complete picture about who Mitt Romney is and why he'd be a great president."

Families of Colo. theater victims question fundraising

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Anguished family members of some of the Colorado theater shooting victims lashed out at a fundraising campaign Tuesday, saying it collected more than $5 million "using pictures and names of our murdered loved ones" but so far has given no more than $5,000 each to families facing bills for medical treatment, travel and other expense from the attack.

The families also said they've been shut out of decisions on how the money should be spent and that fundraisers were unresponsive to their questions and suggestions.

"When you generate donations for a fund called 'the Aurora Victim Relief Fund' using pictures and names of our murdered loved ones, it would stand to reason the fund is for victims of the Aurora shooting," said Tom Teves, whose son Alex was one of 12 people killed in the July 20 shootings. Another 58 people were wounded, and many of them face long recoveries or permanent disability.

At a sometimes-emotional news conference, Teves read a seven-page statement demanding the fundraisers give the victims and their families a say in how the money is used and questioning why so far only a relatively small portion, $350,000, was being distributed to the victims.

Teves said the statement was on behalf of 11 families. Eighteen other people crowded onto a small platform behind him, some dabbing their eyes with tissues, clasping hands or leaning on each other.

The Community First Foundation, asked by Gov. John Hickenlooper to operate the relief fund, said on its website it has raised just over $5 million for the Aurora Victim Relief Fund. The foundation announced on Aug. 17 that it would give $350,000 to the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance to distribute among the surviving victims and the families of those who died. Earlier, it said another $100,000 was given to 10 nonprofit groups.

Marla J. Williams, president the Community First Foundation, said a gag order imposed by Arapahoe County District Judge William Blair Sylvester made it difficult to find all the victims and their families.

She said a group has been set up to recommend how to spend the donations but no victims' representatives have been chosen yet.

"I don't know who represents the victims. There are a number of people who were involved," she said, adding that the group at Tuesday's news conference did not represent all the victims.

Williams said she worries that Tuesday's statement will give donors second thoughts.

"I'm sad because I think there are people who have been very generous and contributors who might think their money has not been used wisely," she said.

The 37-year-old Community First Foundation supports community programs in the metropolitan Denver area.

Nancy Lewis, executive director of the Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance, said the victims and the agencies involved want the same thing: "They want healing for all the crime victims."

She said Sylvester's gag order prevented her from commenting further.

Sylvester issued an order on Aug. 16 barring the organization from releasing names and contact information for the victims. The order does not appear to place any other restrictions on the group.

Teves said the families were humbled by the amount of the donations, and grateful. He said none were speaking out just to get money.

"We have nothing to gain as the families of the murder victims," he said. "We have already lost everything."

He said anyone who was in the theater at the time of the shooting or lived in the same building as the suspect ? who police said had booby-trapped his apartment ? should be eligible to receive help.

Teves insisted the families' purpose wasn't to attack the fundraising groups or the government.

"All we're saying is, 'Listen to us. We have unique knowledge and unique skillsets that we can bring to bear to make this better for all the victims. Why are we shunned to the outside?' That's what this is about."

A meeting is scheduled Friday between victims' families and officials of the fundraising campaign.

Teves challenged Hickenlooper, who attended the slain victims' funerals, to step in and help the families get a say.

"You pledged 12 times that 'We will remember,'" Teves said. "Are you a man who is true to his words, or were they just words?"

Hickenlooper's spokesman, Eric Brown, said the governor understands the families' frustration and is advocating for them to have more say. He said Hickenlooper also wants the fundraisers to improve their communication with the families.

Brown praised the generosity of donors and said the victims would get more money.

"Everyone involved is trying to do the right thing in a very difficult situation," he said.

The suspect in the shootings, 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes, is charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. He has not entered a plea. The next hearing in the case is Thursday.

(AP) ? North Korea, long accused by rights activists of shunting its disabled residents off to isolated detention camps, will take part for the first time this year in the Paralympics, which open Wednesday in London.

The country's sole competitor is a 16-year-old swimmer whose training only began in April. Yet his participation offers inspiration to others involved in North Korea's nascent disabled sports programs, said Li Pun Hui, a former table tennis star who has become her country's leading advocate for disabled athletes.

"Healthy or disabled, if you have the will to succeed, there is no obstacle in your way," Li said.

Earlier this year, Li's work helped gain North Korea provisional membership in the International Paralympic Committee. But the clearance to participate came too late to qualify for most events.

The exception was swimming. Rim Ju Song, who actually lives in Beijing and lost an arm and leg in a construction accident, became his country's only hope. The problem: He couldn't really swim.

The first training session was a disaster. He sank "like a rock," recalled Kim Sung Chol of the North Korean Paralympic Committee. Nevertheless, he soon learned the crawl stroke and in May, Rim and his coaches boarded a plane for Berlin and his first international competition.

Only upon arrival did the North Koreans learn that Rim would need a second stroke to compete. He spent the next two weeks learning the breaststroke. Rim finished last in one event and was disqualified in the other, but that was good enough for a wild card slot in the Paralympics, where on Sept. 4 he'll compete in the 50-meter freestyle.

Gripping the North Korean flag, he smiled Monday as his nation was introduced at a Paralympics welcoming ceremony in London.

His performance will be watched closely back in North Korea, where sports play a major role in life. From the streets of the capital to the dusty fields of the countryside, kids are constantly kicking around soccer balls, and there's a basketball hoop in nearly every schoolyard. From an early age, promising athletes are plucked for rigorous training, and those who win medals at international tournaments are welcomed home as heroes.

One of those heroes was Li, who became her country's darling after teaming up with a South Korean player in 1991 to beat the seemingly indomitable Chinese and win the team gold at the World Table Tennis Championships. It was the first time players from the enemy Koreas competed together.

After her career ended and her now-15-year-old son was born with cerebral palsy, Li dedicated her life to bringing the disabled out of the shadows and onto the playing fields. In 2010, she organized a table tennis tournament that was covered by state media ? the first time many North Koreans saw the disabled on TV.

"Caring for my son, I've felt that people with disabilities often feel despair," she told The Associated Press in an interview in Pyongyang. "They feel uncomfortable around other people, ashamed of their disabilities, and purposeless."

This may be especially true in North Korea. The country has some 1.8 million disabled people, about 7.5 percent of the population, according to the Green Tree Charity Foundation in South Korea, which bases its estimate on figures provided by the North Korean government.

Defectors have reported in the past that the disabled were housed at group homes and kept out of the showcase capital of Pyongyang and other major cities, according to the South Korean government and the U.N. special rapporteur for human rights.

In 2003, the country passed a law promising free medical care and special education, and in 2009 Pyongyang assured the United Nations its disabled were receiving proper care and schooling.

But Kim Kyung Hwa, manager of the Green Tree foundation's planning team, says the country can barely feed its people, much less provide special care for the disabled. Green Tree sends food and supplies to North Korea's disabled, as well as sports equipment to Li and her group of disabled athletes.

The foundation and a slate of other donors have helped provide the pingpong tables, barbells and other equipment that fill a Pyongyang recreation center that serves as a training facility for disabled athletes.

When AP journalists visited the Taeddonggang Cultural Center for the Disabled in June, a girl in a wheelchair was thwacking a pingpong ball fired at her by a coach while a boy fiddled with his prosthetic leg while awaiting his turn.

The young woman, Ma Yu Chol, isn't competing at the Paralympics but she is in London to cheer Rim on. Li said she sees her country's trip to the Paralympics as a "first step" toward developing a disabled sports culture in North Korea.

"People can communicate through sports," she said, "and learn to feel comfortable around one another through sports."

Hurricane Isaac makes landfall in Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Hurricane Isaac made landfall in southern Louisiana on Tuesday, bringing high winds, soaking rains and storm surges that will pose the first major test for New Orleans' multibillion-dollar flood protections put in place after Katrina devastated the U.S. Gulf Coast seven years ago.

Isaac's storm surge poses a major test of the so-called Crescent City's new flood-control systems and reinforced levees that failed in 2005, leaving parts of the city underwater. Forecasts from the U.S. National Hurricane Center showed the storm coming ashore in the Mississippi Delta late on Tuesday, possibly taking direct aim at New Orleans.

"Many parts of the state could see 24 to 38 hours of tropical storm-force winds," Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal told a news conference earlier. "We're going to see a lot of downed trees and power lines," he said. "We need people to stay safe."

Storm surge flooding is already occurring in coastal areas of southeastern Louisiana, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory.

Earlier, the Army Corps of Engineers closed for the first time the massive new floodgate on the largest storm-surge barrier in the world, at Lake Borgne, east of New Orleans.

In other preparations, oil production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico nearly ground to a halt, and ports and coastal refineries curtailed operations as Isaac approached.

At 6 p.m. CDT (2300 GMT), the Hurricane Center said Isaac was centered about 95 miles southeast of New Orleans with top sustained winds of 80 miles per hour.

The storm was traveling at a relatively slow 8 mph. That pace is a concern for people in its path since slow-moving cyclones can bring higher rainfall totals.

Isaac was about 370 miles wide. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center of the storm.

Heavy rains and big storm surges were also forecast for parts of Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

After Katrina, the Corps of Engineers built a $14.5 billion flood defense system of walls, floodgates, levees and pumps designed to protect the city against a massive tidal surge like the one that swamped New Orleans in Katrina's wake.

Isaac had New Orleans in its sights as the city is still recovering from Katrina, which swept across it on August 29, 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage.

Update ? Meaningful Data

Update ? Meaningful Data

Apparently, it?s time for my semi-annual blog update!

I?ve been focusing a bit more on work-work this year, and dialing it back on some of the writing and speaking. Not entirely, just gathering up my thoughts so that I can continue working on things that are interesting and relevant.

Writing:?I?ve continued to post?Scatter/Gather, Razorfish?s Content Strategy blog. And I also published some articles elsewhere this year.

Speaking:?This year I got more serious about scaling back on the public speaking. The?My?Presentations?page has been updated with info and links to recordings (when available). Here?s also a list of just the new ones:

  • Metadata Workshop?? Content Strategy Applied, London, UK, March 1-2, 2012 (on?slideshare)
  • Content Strategy: Why Now??? Sis?lt?strategiaseminaari 2012 (Content Strategy Seminar 2012), Helsinki, Finland, February 8, 2012 (on?slideshare)
  • Coming soon ? I?ll be co-presenting a workshop and giving a talk at?Content Strategy Forum 2012, Cape Town, South Africa, October 24-26, 2012
  • Attending: Even though I?m doing less speaking, I still love the inspiration of going to conferences. I also went to Confab, and soon I?ll be going to dconstruct and XOXO.

Other:?One other thing I?ve been up to ? I?m serving as Producer on a documentary that Jason Scott is shooting about DEFCON. Here?s a teaser trailer. There?s some other clips, teasers, and test footage on Jason?s YouTube channel.

Romney Convention Reset 'Not Gonna Work,' Obama Camp Says

In a prebuttal to the Republican Convention, the Obama campaign says attempts by presumptive nominee Mitt Romney to refresh his image on the national stage are "not gonna work."

A spoof movie trailer produced by the campaign - dubbed an "epic cinematic preview " of Romney's week ahead - openly mocks Romney for what is portrayed as his repeated failure to cultivate a positive image.

"Nothing is working," says the announcer over a dramatic soundtrack. "His only hope is a convention reinvention. And an Etch-a-sketch of epic proportions will be shaken to its core."

Romney enters his convention week in Tampa, Fla., with the lowest personal popularity ratings for a presumptive presidential nominee since 1984. Forty percent of Americans have a favorable view of Romney, 49 percent unfavorable, according to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll.

Republicans have enlisted an army of image-makers, advertising managers, designers and media producers to help craft a convention program that can showcase Romney at his best, trying to overcome the negative associations Democrats have been pushing for months.

"On Aug. 30, Mitt Romney stars in the Do-Over," the narrator in the spoof says. "Rated N for not gonna work."

Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg called the video a personal, negative attack contrary to the president's high-minded rhetoric about elevating the tone of the campaign.

"President Obama continues to prove he has little he can say about his indefensible record in office, which has led to chronic unemployment, increased poverty, falling incomes and middle-class pain," Henneberg said in a statement.

"With public confidence in the President falling, his campaign will continue to rely on negative attacks that will be rejected by the American people," she said.

The Republican National Convention begins Tuesday after organizers suspended the first day of activities on Monday due to concerns over Hurricane Isaac bearing down on the Florida coast.

Romney will deliver a primetime, nationally-televised address accepting the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday.

T.O. released by Seahawks

Terrell Owens' NFL return lasted less than three weeks.

Owens was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, part of the league-mandated roster reductions from 90 to 75 players.

The 38-year-old receiver posted a message on his Twitter account shortly before 11 a.m. that he had been released and the Seahawks made the move official in the afternoon.

"I'm no longer a Seahawk," Owens tweeted. "I THANK the organization 4 the opportunity, I'm truly blessed beyond belief. My FAITH is intact & will NOT waiver."

Owens wasn't the only veteran to get cut by the Seahawks. Offensive linemen Deuce Lutui and Alex Barron both had their veteran contracts terminated, while Seattle waived/injured defensive back Roy Lewis (knee), tight end Cameron Morrah (toe), defensive tackle Pep Levingston (knee) and linebacker Jamison Konz (shoulder).

Owens signed a one-year deal with Seattle (No. 22 in APPro32) on Aug. 7, following a sterling workout that had coaches and Seahawks staff raving about how good he looked for having not played an NFL game in more than 18 months.

"We really liked the group that we assembled. Terrell came in here and busted his tail and he looked really effective right from the start," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. "But as we just took a look at our guys that are coming through the program and growing up with us we thought that it would be best for us to stay with those guys."

Owens signed just before Seattle's first preseason game and made his debut in the second week against Denver. But his preseason performance was more notable for the passes he dropped than anything he caught.

Owens dropped a potential 46-yard touchdown against Denver on a perfect throw from Matt Flynn. He failed to make a catch in any of his five targets against the Broncos and then had another glaring drop against Kansas City on Friday night.

He finished the preseason with just two receptions ? a 40-yard catch from Russell Wilson where Owens had to slow down and lean back to haul in the pass and a 1-yard reception on a screen.

For as impressive as his long catch was in Seattle's 44-14 win over the Chiefs, it served as Owens' only highlight in a Seahawks uniform.

Owens was trying to make a comeback after not playing since Week 15 of the 2010 season while with Cincinnati. He sat out the entire 2011 season following surgery on his left knee and failed to receive any offers.

Owens got the rust off this spring playing for the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League. He had 35 catches for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns while playing eight of 11 games, but was released and lost an ownership stake in the team in May.

Owens, a third-round draft choice by San Francisco in 1996, has started 201 of the 219 regular-season NFL games he has played in his career. He has 1,078 receptions for 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns ? the second most in league history.

His nine seasons with at least 1,000 yards receiving and 13 years with at least 50 catches rank third. His total receptions are sixth on the NFL career list. Owens spent eight seasons with San Francisco, two with Philadelphia, and three with Dallas before a pair of one-year stints with Buffalo and Cincinnati.

"I've been rehabbing and working out for the past year since the injury and that's all I've ever wanted since I've been out is another opportunity," Owens said following his first practice on Aug. 8. "That has been given to me by the Seattle Seahawks and again I am very grateful for that."

Among Seattle's other cuts to reach the 75-man limit were wide receiver Phil Bates, running back Tyrell Sutton, cornerbacks Ron Parker and Donny Lisowski and offensive lineman Edawn Coughman.
