Career Advice: Learn to Be Your Own Cheerleader

Throughout middle school, high school, and college, we all got used to having benchmarks, reward systems, and cheerleaders built into our daily existence. There are exams to tell you how well you?re progressing in class, honors and other accolades to reward you for your hard work, and teachers, parents and friends to pick you up and cheer you on when you?re struggling.

Unfortunately, the working world doesn?t offer this kind of continual feedback loop, and that?s one of the hardest things for recent graduates to come to terms with. Rather than quarterly evaluations, you may be waiting a whole year to do a review with your boss. Instead of instant feedback on papers and quizzes, you may have to wait to see how your department as a whole performs at the end of a quarter. And if you?re starting your own business or are in the midst of the job search, you?re really on your own when the going gets tough. That?s why if you want to get ahead in your career, you have to learn to self-motivate and be your own cheerleader.

Here are a few ways to give yourself the kinds of rewards and achievement recognition you?re used to getting from the educational system.

Set Your Own Benchmarks
In school, you?re completely in charge of your destiny. How well you do is directly related to how much work you put in to your studies.? But in your career, it might not always be that transparent. Some projects you work on may take weeks or months to come together, and you may be waiting on information or documents from other departments.

So make your own daily, weekly and monthly benchmarks. If you?re in a new position, this may mean completing a particular task or leaning a new skill. If you?re in a job search, this may mean submitting a certain number of resumes each week or attending networking events in your area. Whatever they are, make them as finite as possible (i.e. ?apply to such and such company? vs. ?send out resumes?), because nothing feels better than crossing off an item on your to-do list.

Learn How to Measure Success
In your educational career, success came in the form of As or Bs. But you don?t get a clear cut grade for what?s happening in your career. This is especially true if you?re position doesn?t have a set relationship to company profits (i.e. a sales position). This means you need to examine your personal benchmarks (as explained above) and figure out how to measure them. That may mean talking to others in your company, like colleagues or your boss, and figuring out how what you do helps sales, decreases costs, or increases productivity. Once you?ve got an idea of how you can measure your success, see what tools exist out there to help you track and monitor it. This will not only help you in your current position, but it will also provide great statistics and measurements to use should you decide to start a job search.

Have an (Inexpensive) Rewards System
It would be awesome if every single time you had career success, you got a raise. But really, that?s not feasible in the business world. So create a rewards system you can rely on when you reach one of your own personal benchmarks or you complete a major project at work. The key here is to keep it inexpensive ? buying a pair of designer shoes or the latest electronic gadget every time something awesome happens is only going to eat into your bank account. Take yourself to lunch, watch your favorite movie, or get together with friends to reward yourself for a job well done.

(AP) ? The New York Jets were a delicious treat for the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco used a solid running game, a smothering defense, a little bit of the wildcat-style offense and even blocked a punt to cruise to a 34-0 victory. That romp came a week after a loss at Minnesota in which the 49ers were just as outclassed as the Jets were Sunday.

"For sure, the whole week there was more of an edge; it was just a bad taste in your mouth," Alex Smith said. "I don't think that goes away in one day. We wanted to be 3-1 and got it done."

They got it done so emphatically that Jets coach Rex Ryan was visibly shaken by the lopsided defeat, so much so that he struggled to describe how poorly his Jets (2-2) performed.

"It's obviously unacceptable," Ryan said. "It starts with the coaches. The players ... they've got to dig deep, look down at the themselves."

Ryan took no solace from his team losing to one of the NFL's best. San Francisco (3-1) has everything Ryan wishes his team did.

The 49ers ran for 245 yards and Carlos Rogers returned a fumble 51 yards for a touchdown.

Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick ? on a wildcat-like option ? all ran for scores. The defense had an interception and three fumble recoveries, and special teams blocked Robert Malone's punt to set up the final touchdown.

Defensive end Aldon Smith called it a statement win.

"Yeah, that's right," he said. "After the last game, some people were questioning us and we knew what we were capable of. We played all together as a unit and proved what we are as a defense."

And as an offense. And on special teams.

Rather than head back to the West Coast after the Minnesota loss, coach Jim Harbaugh chose to have his team stay in eastern Ohio and practice at Youngstown State all week. Last season, the 49ers did the same thing and won both games, in Cincinnati and then at Philadelphia. The 49ers wound up going to the NFC championship that season, and if they play anything like they did against the Jets, they could very well find themselves advancing deep into the postseason again.

"This is more the way we are accustomed to playing," said Harbaugh, the 2011 Coach of the Year.

It was San Francisco's first shutout since beating the St. Louis Rams 26-0 last December.

Meanwhile, the Jets lost top wide receiver Santonio Holmes to what appeared to be a serious left foot injury. It was the first time New York was shut out since losing 9-0 to Green Bay on Oct. 31, 2010, and the Jets' biggest shutout home loss since falling 37-0 to Buffalo in 1989.

If Holmes misses significant time, the Jets would be without their two biggest playmakers after All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis was likely lost for the season with a torn ligament in his left knee last week at Miami.

"We got to play with who we've got," Mark Sanchez said. "None of those guys are going to get better overnight."

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Holmes caught a pass from Sanchez for 4 yards, but his left leg appeared to go out on him. The ball flew out of his hands, and Rogers picked it up and returned it for a score.

Holmes left the stadium in a golf cart, holding crutches, his left foot in a boot.

Ryan said Friday that the Jets would wait to put Revis on injured reserve until he has surgery in a few weeks, keeping him available in case New York goes to the Super Bowl. If the Jets play like this the rest of the way, getting to the playoffs will be a tall task.

Alex Smith was efficient, going 12 of 21 for 143 yards and no touchdowns, but more importantly, no interceptions. Sanchez had another poor game, going 13 of 29 for 103 yards and an interception.

"We knew Sanchez holds the ball a little longer and we felt we could get after him," Aldon Smith said. "We pretty much did."

New York finished with just 45 yards rushing.

The wildcat-style offense worked early ? but for the 49ers and not Tim Tebow and the Jets.

Kaepernick put the 49ers up 7-0 early in the second quarter, taking a direct snap and running untouched off left end for a 7-yard touchdown. Kaepernick also had a 17-yard run earlier in the game.

On the Jets' next possession, Tebow threw his first pass with New York, a short one over the middle to tight end Dedrick Epps, who was upended immediately by Dashon Goldson as the ball came loose. Rogers recovered, and the fumble call was upheld by video review. Epps injured his right knee on the play.

With just over a minute left in the first half, the 49ers were aggressive despite starting the drive at their 26. A 23-yard catch by Vernon Davis on first down got things rolling, and San Francisco ended the half on David Akers' 36-yard field goal.

Boos and some chants of "Tee-boww! Tee-boww!" rang out as the Jets went three-and-out for the second straight possession in the second half. It never got any better for New York.

NOTES: Mario Manningham, a Super Bowl hero with Giants before joining the Niners as free agent, returned to the Meadowlands and had three catches for 47 yards, plus a 28-yard gain on an end-around ... Akers also missed from 55 and 40 yards wide right ... New York lost fullback John Conner with a hamstring injury ... San Francisco got 62 yards rushing from Gore, 56 from Hunter and 50 from Kaepernick.

    Since he wasn?t being asked to rush the passer last season, Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan ballooned up to 300 pounds.

    But now that he has a coach who trusts him, and needs him, a slimmed down Jordan is beginning to justify the first-round pick they spent on him.

    ?It?s awesome to be able to have the trust from the coaches to be able to do all these positions,? Jordan told Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com.

    Jordan might be the one qualified pass-rushing defensive lineman to truly fit into defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo?s system in New Orleans, and he?s getting plenty of chances.

    Pigeonholed a year ago as a run-stopper only, and subbed out on third downs, Jordan bulked up.

    ?Halfway through the season, it was like, ?I?m going to be stuck in this role, I?m going to hit somebody in the mouth [on running plays],? Jordan said. ?I don?t need to worry about pass rush anymore. It was a bitter moment.?

    But unlike former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, Spagnuolo isn?t going to blitz as much, wanting to get all his pressure from his front four.

    And he?s using the now-285-pound Jordan all along the front four to try to get some push, the way Spagnuolo used to use Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora in New York.

    ?Everyone has comparisons of what I could be or can do,? Jordan said. ?It?s more along the lines of, ?What do our coaches think I can do now???

    He leads all NFL defensive linemen in tackle. That?s partly because the Saints can?t get off the field, allowing the fourth-most plays from scrimmage in the league. But he?s also been noticeable in his impact, something that wasn?t being said last year.

    Investing? 6 Types of Properties to Pursue | Zillow Blog

    If you?re interested in improving your lot in life?? no pun intended?? by becoming a property mogul and investing your hard-earned capital into income-producing properties, there are some general guiding principles that should increase your chances of earning wealth.

    One of the better ways to improve your wealth is to reduce your risk on the properties you purchase. This will allow you to buy lower-risk real estate, which hopefully will earn a fair amount of wealth for you over time. Go for these:

    Properties in very good shape

    Too many people buy fixer-uppers thinking they?ll add value by doing a renovation. Then they get mired in a much more expensive and time consuming property than they ever expected. More money into the property means lower investment returns for you and less wealth-building than you expected. Skip fixers and instead buy properties that are in as good shape as possible, which should get those rental checks coming into your bank account in as short a period as possible.

    Properties in moderately priced areas with good cash flows

    Real estate is all about location, location, location! The properties in the best locations (think beach areas, downtown, wealthy enclaves) generally have very negative cash flows, so those are the location, location, locations you want to avoid. The moderately priced properties in working-class areas are the real gems; they generally have the boring locations, but much better cash flows. Of course pencil out any deal with conservative rents and expenses, and go for beginning year cash on cash return of at least 4 to 6 percent, based on your conservative estimates.

    Communities with HOAs in good financial, legal, operational shape

    There are many, many landmines in buying properties in common interest developments. And you aren?t just buying your property; you?re buying into a larger entity called the homeowners association (HOA). And if it is in financial, legal or operational trouble, you pay the bills. Make sure to do your due diligence on this?? and it?s a lot of hard work to do it properly. Learn what you need to look at way before you go into escrow.

    Properties that come with decent credit quality tenants in place

    There is nothing better than buying a property with a decent tenant already in place. You get the security deposit and pro-rated rent, and you don?t have to go in and clean, paint, update or fix too many things in the unit. If you buy properties in areas that have decent credit quality tenants, that?s hopefully the type of tenant you will inherit. Also take a look at the current tenant?s lease, credit application and credit report, if you can, before you make the decision to purchase the property.

    Properties in low vacancy areas

    Vacant units get robbed, incur vandalism and don?t have any rent coming in to cover the bills. If you buy in places with really high vacancy, it might be months or years before you get the property rented out at a fair rental rate. So really think through buying properties in areas with many unoccupied units. Drive around at dinner time: No lights in a lot of neighborhood houses means no one is residing there, and you shouldn?t, either.

    Properties you will own a long time

    The most important factor in real estate investment property is to own it for a long time?? in fact, forever is the optimal ownership horizon. So do your due diligence and buy quality properties that you really like for all the right reasons, and plan to own them for good. That?s your best bet to earn wealth on real estate.

    If you buy properties with ALL the above characteristics, that will greatly increase the chances you will add wealth to your nest egg from your real estate ownership. So try to acquire properties that have as many of the above good qualities as possible, and skip the ones that don?t make the cut!

Who knew that touching bases with nature could reduce stress, increase productivity, and promote positive mental health?? When was the last time that you used the out of doors to renew your spirit and get in touch with your inner self?

    The author had some great ideas for bringing nature back into your life. You don?t always have to go somewhere to enjoy nature.? The simple act of planting a flower bed or working in a garden can be good for you. ?Have you thought of creating a backyard wildlife habitat?? You can also bring nature indoors with flowers, plants, a mini-indoor garden or a greenhouse.? The best suggestions were about how to be a nature mentor to your grandchildren.? Kids don?t go out and play like they did in our day, so finding ways to introduce them to nature is a perfect way to spend time with them.? ??My husband still remembers every bird call and can name nearly every plant and tree that we come across, which makes it great fun to hike with him.? We took our nephew along for a walk one day, many years ago, and he remembers that outing to this day.

    Studies show that even minor contact with nature can have a dramatic effect on your mental wellbeing.? Isn?t it time to reestablish your bond with nature?

    Saying the party has ?zero tolerance? for voter fraud, the GOP also filed complaints against the company with the Florida Secretary of State?s office. The company, run by long-time GOP operative Nathan Sproul, says a single employee was responsible for the forged signatures, though the problem, by Friday, had spread to 10 counties.

    "This is an issue we take extremely seriously," RNC spokesman Sean Spicer told CBS News. "When allegations were brought to our attention we severed all ties to the firm."

    While reasonable, those explanations could have trouble finding traction among the US electorate, which has watched battles erupt in mostly swing states from Florida to Ohio over control of voter rolls, and heated debates about potential disenfranchisement of key Democratic constituencies, poorer, minority, and elderly voters.

    The allegations are particularly poignant in Florida, which decided the presidential race in 2000 after a massive recount was halted by the US Supreme Court in a way that gave the election to the GOP, and where the current Republican state administration has fought with the US Department of Justice over an effort to weed out illegal immigrants from the state?s voter rolls.

    Even more to the point of third-party voter registration contractors, the League of Women Voters sued Florida earlier this month after it instituted a new 48-hour deadline for turning in registration forms. The state relented, reinstating a 10-day deadline.

    What?s more, the fraudulent registration findings have echoes of the 2008 controversies over the now-disbanded ACORN community activism group, which was accused by Republicans in 2008 of falsifying forms.

    Brad Friedman, who runs the electoral watchdog Brad Blog, helped break the story, tying it to other emerging GOP registration controversies in California and Colorado. Other states where Sproul?s firm had been hired to gather registrations have not reported any problems.

    ?A massive GOP voter registration scheme, which appears to involve the upper-echelons of the national party, [has begun] to emerge,? Mr. Friedman writes.

    Passenger accused of grabbing women on flight restrained

    A belligerent passenger on a flight from Chicago to Orange County, Calif., was tackled by fellow fliers and arrested for allegedly interfering with flight crew members. The incident was caught on cell phone video. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

    Passengers used belts to restrain a man who was taken into custody Tuesday night after allegedly harassing people ? including a woman who said he grabbed her hair and asked her to kiss him???aboard a flight from Chicago to Santa Ana, Calif.

    Passenger Nona Pitts told NBC4 in Southern California that the man, identified by the FBI as 26-year-old actor-model Arash Durrani, sat across from her on United Airlines Flight 473. Pitts asked whether he was "on anything" because of his strange behavior.

    "He was kind of slurring his words," Pitts said. "He just goes, 'Why, you want some?'"


    "The stewardess came by and he said, 'I want another (Jack Daniels),'" she said. Pitts told the flight attendant she thought the man had enough to drink, but said he received "two more bottles of J.D."

    Pitts, who owns an Orange County, Calif. salon, moved to a different seat, but Durrani followed her, she said.

    "He grabs my hair and he goes, 'Nona, Nona, Nona, kiss me,'" said Pitts.

    When the man started pacing and scaring children on the plane, passenger David Truong said he and other passengers took action and physically restrained the man with belts.

    "He looked at every one of us and said, 'I'm going to kill you and your entire family,'" Truong said.

    The man was restrained for nearly three hours.

    Durrani, who also goes by "Ash," is listed as an actor in one movie that hasn't been released. His agent, Sheila Di Marco, said Wednesday she hadn't heard anything about the incident.

    Durrani will be charged with a federal offense for interference with a flight crew, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

    Durrani used to reside in Costa Mesa but now lives in Virginia. He was due back in Southern California for a criminal court appearance, according to the FBI.

    Identification of microbes in healthy lungs sheds light on cystic fibrosis

    ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Healthy people's lungs are home to a diverse community of microbes that differs markedly from the bacteria found in the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. That's the result of new research from Stanford University and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, which has wide implications for treatment of cystic fibrosis and other lung diseases.

    "The lung is not a sterile organ," said David Cornfield, MD, an author of the new study, published Sept. 26 in Science Translational Medicine. Although decades of received scientific wisdom said healthy lungs lacked resident microbes, scientists had begun questioning that notion. "This research confirmed a long-held suspicion that a forest of microbes exists in both healthy and diseased lungs," said Cornfield, a pulmonologist at Packard Children's and a professor of pediatrics in pulmonary medicine at the School of Medicine. "More surprising, our data presents a suggestion that the lung flora provides microbial homeostasis that might function to preserve health."

    Healthy lungs' microbes have been overlooked in part because past research has focused heavily on lung diseases, Cornfield said. Another flaw in prior studies was a bias toward looking for micro-organisms that could be grown in labs. Many of the types of microbes that the Stanford researchers found in healthy lungs have never been cultured in a laboratory.

    In contrast, a large body of research had previously shown chronic microbial colonization in the lungs of people with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease characterized by serious, progressive lung problems and death from respiratory failure. For instance, CF patients are vulnerable to chronic infection with the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause pneumonia.

    The new study used sputum samples from 16 CF patients and nine healthy control patients. The scientists also analyzed lung tissue samples from seven patients' explanted lungs, the organs removed when the patients received lung transplants. (Three lung-transplant recipients had CF; four had other lung diseases.) The researchers extracted DNA from the sputum and tissue, and selectively copied genes coding for the 16S ribosomal gene sequences, which are found only in bacteria. The resulting genetic material was measured to determine which phyla, or families, of bacteria it came from and the relative contributions of each bacterial phylum to the total bacterial population in the lungs.

    Several differences emerged between CF patients and healthy people's communities of lung bacteria. In general, healthy individuals had more diversity among their lung bacteria. Different bacterial phyla predominated in the two groups: members of the Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria phyla were much more prominent in healthy individuals, whereas CF patients had a larger percentage of Actinobacteria. Also, healthy people had a larger proportion of bacteria that had never been grown in a lab.

    "I think the tendency toward decreased diversity can be metaphorically viewed as the same phenomenon that might happen in a rainforest," Cornfield said. "When the ecosystem of a rainforest is disturbed and one organism predominates, it undermines a carefully constructed balance and causes disturbances in overall ecosystem. I think it's reasonable to assume something similar could happen in the lung microbiome, where pathogenic bacteria may out-compete organisms that may play a salutary, health-affirming role."

    The results open many questions for future research. No one has ever tested the idea that certain microbes benefit lung health, for instance. "We may need to consider strategies that allow favorable microbes to exist while eradicating disease-causing species," Cornfield said. "That paradigm, if it's true, would really turn the care of patients with pneumonia and other lower-airway diseases on its head." Future research might test whether CF or pneumonia patients could benefit from doses of probiotic bacteria to their lungs, he said.

    In addition, no one is sure how the antibiotics often given to CF patients change the microbes in their lungs.

    "The marked differences in composition and diversity of microbial communities from adults with cystic fibrosis and normal controls are intriguing," said Thomas Ferkol, MD, director of allergy, immunology and pulmonary medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "The question that remains to be answered is whether these differences are directly related to the underlying lung disease or simply a consequence of frequent antibiotic use, which has been shown to change microbiota of the upper airways." Ferkol was not involved in the research.

    More questions arise from the fact that bacterial profiles varied within the group of CF patients. CF patients differ widely in their disease progression, even when they have the same disease-causing gene mutations. It is possible that patients' lung function may be linked to the bacteria present in their lungs. The research team now plans to study whether individual patients' bacterial profiles can be used to predict their clinical condition.

    Cornfield collaborated with first author Paul Blainey, PhD, previously a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford and now a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Carlos Milla, MD, an associate professor of pediatrics in pulmonary medicine at Stanford and a pulmonologist at Packard Children's; and senior author Stephen Quake, PhD, professor of bioengineering and of applied physics at Stanford and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

    Parks and Recreation: Who Made the Comedy Grade Last Night?

    I've come to realize that my favorite Parks and Recreation episodes are the ones that are cartoonish in plot but realistic when it comes to the characters -- last year's "Pawnee Rangers" sticks out to me for doing just that, while last week's "Ms. Knope Goes to Washington" was disappointing because the Leslie-Ben plot was all too accurate while Ron's character was a caricature. Or, I don't know, maybe I just really enjoyed last night's "Soda Tax" because of clever writing and great acting. Either way.

    I love when Parks & Rec gets a little topical, and for those of you not living in New York City, I can assure you that you cannot throw a 64-ounce Coke in this city without hitting someone who wants to discuss Bloomberg's soda ban. The way that this episode tackled it, as well as Ben's new managerial role and Andy's fitness training, made me feel like I was watching a live-action episode of The Simpsons, Seasons 3 through 7 quality. Instead of getting political about the real-life issue, the writers obviously had a lot of fun and the show in general felt back in its groove. Phew! I would have preferred an episode like this to start the season, but I'm glad that it at least came sooner rather than later.

    Okay, let's grade everyone!

    Leslie and Ann: B+
    I really appreciate the episodes where Leslie and Ann are simply just being supportive and wonderful to each other -- it allows for the funniest BFF moments later on, and shows rather than tells. That said, aside from Leslie eating a ton of sugar while Ann is grossed out at everyone, Leslie and Ann weren't their funniest last night... probably because they weren't drunk. Also, when Amy Poehler looks sad, I get sad, because I am that much of a fangirl. (She was even sadder on Louie last night, if you can believe it!).
    Leslie's Best Line of the Night: "Gentlemen, it appears that I have fallen ill. Mayhaps I suggest that we might have a recess? [Pukes] Can we take a recess?"
    Ann's Best Line of the Night: "We're not taxing anyone's genitals."

    Ron: A-
    I'm definitely being generous on this grade, but I am just really happy that Ron was a well-rounded person last night. He was helpful and sweet to Leslie without it being too adorable for its own good, and he didn't even mention meat! Again, showing not telling did wonders for his character. And how much did you love the callback to the automatic door-closer that Leslie got for Ron for Christmas?

    Andy, Chris and Tom: A
    It's gotten to the point that when Andy is onscreen, I need to actively make sure I'm not drinking or eating anything, because he will cause me to do a spit-take. Even the photo of him donning a bandana as underwear in the opening made me crack up. Then adding him "already being able" to squeeze his butt muscles and his celebration for being "minimum champion" and setting a record for running a lap in "43" -- perfection. Chris's callback to his rare blood disorder as a baby was welcomed, and I'm glad that after two seasons of showing us how lonely Chris is, he's finally going to go to therapy. And Tom was actually normal and self-aware while being funny! Honestly, it's mostly just great to laugh when I know I also have nothing... the silent killer.
    Andy's Best Line of the Night: "I'm never gonna be a cop. I'm gonna have to be a robber."
    Chris's Best Line of the Night: "Andy, I'm proud of you. Not because of what you did, which was terrible, but because of what I'm going to able to get you to do. I guess I'm proud of me."

    Ben and April: A+
    April's relationship with the men in her life is one of the best parts of this show -- not only since these kids of platonic friendships that are vaguely father-daughter are so rarely shown on TV, but mainly because Aubrey Plaza works so well with freakin' everyone. Ben's interns thinking that he was April's father was brilliant... really, everything about Ben was amazing last night. He genuinely made me feel awkward with his 'za break and ultimate Frisbee sesh (m'dudes). I've got two questions, though: What is with this writing staff's obsession with fonts, and when is the NBC store going to start selling Champion dolls?
    Ben's Best Line of the Night: After an extended and especially awkward rendition of Rob Schneider's "Richmeister" Saturday Night Live bit, obviously defeated: "Oh, it's a... it's from 40 years ago, never mind."

    You already know what I'm going to say about the lack of them, but Jerry supergluing his fingers together restore faith in Leslie made me very happy.

    Smoking in movies increases in 2011, reverses five years of progress

    ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Top box office films last year showed more onscreen smoking than the prior year, reversing five years of steady progress in reducing tobacco imagery in movies, according to a new UCSF study.

    Moreover, many of the top-grossing films of 2011 with significant amounts of smoking targeted a young audience, among them the PG-rated cartoon Rango and X-Men: First Class." The more smoking young people see in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking, the U.S. Surgeon General has reported.

    The study will be available Sept. 27, 2012 in Preventing Chronic Disease Journal, an online, peer-reviewed publication of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

    "Hollywood has still not fixed this problem," said lead author Stanton A. Glantz, PhD, a professor of medicine at UCSF and director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. "The result of the increase in onscreen smoking in youth-rated films will be more kids starting to smoke and developing tobacco-induced disease."

    The UCSF study was conducted in conjunction with Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down!, a project of Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails, which annually tracks tobacco use in the nation's top-grossing movies.

    Altogether, the 134 top-grossing films of 2011 depicted nearly 1,900 tobacco "incidents," the analysis found. An incident is defined as one use or implied use (such as a lit cigarette) of a tobacco product by an actor.

    Total tobacco incidents per movie rose seven percent from 2010 to 2011. Among movies rated G, PG or PG-13, smoking incidents per movie soared by 36 percent.

    The data was obtained by counting tobacco incidents in movies whose box office sales ranked in the top 10 for at least a week.

    Some of the films that showed the most smoking were "period" movies, such as "The Help," "Midnight in Paris," and "Hugo," which depicted an era when smoking was more common than it is today. But others were fantasy films, including "Cowboys & Aliens," "Green Hornet" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1," which were aimed squarely at the youth market, noted Glantz.

    "Movies continue to deliver billions of smoking images to adolescents," the authors reported.

    In stark contrast to prior years, the three major film companies that have adopted policies designed to discourage smoking in their movies depicted just as many tobacco incidents per youth-rated movie as companies that lack tobacco use policies.

    Those three studios with tobacco reduction policies are: Time Warner (established policy in 2005), Comcast (2007) and Disney (2004). The three companies with no such policies: Viacom, News Corp. and Sony.

    The study authors, noting that about two-thirds of subsidies for top-grossing movies are earmarked for productions with smoking, recommended that health departments work with policy makers to correlate movie subsidies with public health interests in reducing smoking.

    "These results underscore a need for an industry-wide policy to keep smoking out of films marketed to youth," Glantz said. "An R rating for movies with smoking would give film producers an incentive to keep smoking out of movies aimed at young viewers. The exception would be when the movie clearly reflects the dangers and consequences of tobacco use, or represents the smoking of a real historical figure."

    Tobacco, the leading cause of preventable and premature death, kills an estimated 443,000 Americans annually, according to the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Every day in the U.S., an estimated 3,800 young people smoke a cigarette for the first time, the agency reported earlier this year.

    Co-authors are Anne Iaccopucci, youth program manager, and Kori Titus, chief executive officer, of Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails; and Jonathan R. Polansky, a consultant with Onbeyond LLC.

    The analysis was funded by the American Legacy Foundation.

    For decades, Glantz and UCSF have been at the forefront of tobacco research, disclosing how the tobacco industry manipulated its products and led the public into cigarette addiction. Smoke Free Movies, a project run by Glantz at UCSF, centers on reducing cinematic smoking. The UCSF Legacy Library, now 12 years old, has more than 13 million documents on file that were released as a result of litigation against the major tobacco companies related to their advertising, manufacturing, marketing, sales, political, public relations and scientific activities.

    John R. Silber (Hon.?95), the president emeritus and former chancellor who led the transformation of Boston University from a commuter school to a renowned research institution, died early this morning, Thursday, September 27, at age 86. The cause of death was kidney failure.

    Silber, who came to Boston University in 1971, was the University?s seventh president, and served for more than three decades, as president until 1996, then as University chancellor from 1996 to 2003. He also was a College of Arts & Sciences professor of philosophy and of international relations, a University Professor, and a School of Law professor of law.

    Silber was strong-willed, outspoken, and often controversial, and his resolute work ethic, formidable capacity for knowledge, and dogged determination to improve both BU and the city of Boston made him well known in academic as well as political circles. During his tenure at BU?which coincided, for a time, with his unsuccessful 1990 run for governor of Massachusetts?he greatly expanded the campus, recruited top-notch faculty, including two future Nobel Prize winners, and established the University?s long-running partnership with the Chelsea Public School system, which began in 1988 and continued for 20 years. The University he served for so long awarded him an honorary degree at the 1995 Commencement.

    ?In the seven years I have served this wonderful institution, I have come to appreciate the magnitude of what John Silber accomplished at Boston University,? says University President Robert A. Brown. ?He worked tirelessly to transform the University, introducing ever higher standards in the hiring and promotion of faculty and admission of students. There were some who found fault with his candor, and those who disagreed with him on some policy or decision, but nobody can deny John?s legacy. He was famously outspoken and unhesitant in decision-making. He left an indelible imprint on Boston University and set the foundation for the course to greatness that we are steering today. We owe John a tremendous debt of gratitude.?

    While his tendency toward blunt speech earned him moments of local and national attention, most memorably during his gubernatorial campaign, his friends and supporters praised him for choosing truth over tact. ?I called him the last candid man,? author Tom Wolfe (Hon.?00) said. ?There aren?t many left who say what they mean, and mean what they say.?

    Silber was born in San Antonio, Tex., to Jewell Silber, a schoolteacher, and Paul Silber, an architect who immigrated to the United States from Berlin in 1902. He described his parents as ?strict but loving? people who ?gave no excuses.? In 1989, he told the Boston Globe about his realization at age four that his right arm, shortened by a congenital birth defect, would never grow. ?My mother always fixed my sleeves so I would have use of my arm,? he said. ?She never hid it. Neither have I. By not pampering me, they let me develop into the person that I am.?

    He attended Trinity University in San Antonio, where he met his wife, Kathryn (Hon.?01), and graduated with a degree in philosophy. He earned a master?s degree in 1952 and a doctorate in 1956 from Yale, both in philosophy, then returned to his home state to teach philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. He was named chair of the philosophy department in 1962, and the dean of UT?s College of Arts and Sciences in 1967, but a clash with the chairman of the university?s board of regents over a plan to split the college into smaller schools led to his dismissal in July 1970. His principled stand, however, won the attention of the BU presidential search committee, then entering the ninth month of looking for a new leader.

    When Silber arrived the following year, the school bore little resemblance to the BU of today. The campus had only 66 education and research buildings and 42 residence halls, the library had less than a million books, and most critically, the University was operating at a budget deficit of $8.8 million.

    ?When I came here, we didn?t have a list of our alumni,? Silber told the University?s weekly newspaper, the BU Bridge, in 2002. ?We didn?t have a balanced budget. We didn?t have a computerized payroll system. We were raising only about $2.5 million a year. Back then, running Boston University was like trying to fly a 747 without avionics, without an instrument panel.?

    Silber took an ambitious tack, balancing the University?s budget in 18 months, and then launching an aggressive campaign to hire new faculty, first in the humanities and social sciences, then in the life sciences. Elie Wiesel (Hon.?74), the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities, was recruited in 1976, and Derek Walcott, a College of Arts & Sciences professor emeritus of creative writing, in 1982?both went on to win Nobel Prizes, Wiesel?s in peace, and Walcott?s in literature. At Silber?s behest, two other Nobel laureates joined the faculty, the late Saul Bellow (Hon.?04), a University Professor and a CAS professor, in 1993, and Sheldon Glashow, the Arthur G. B. Metcalf Professor of Mathematics and Science, in 2000.

    Over the next 25 years, BU experienced a period of unprecedented growth and engagement with the city of Boston. New programs and institutes served a range of constituencies?with the founding of the Prison Education Program in 1972, Metropolitan College offered courses for prisoners in state correctional facilities, while the University Professors Program allowed advanced undergraduates to plan their own curricula. The physical plant improved dramatically as well, doubling in size with the addition of facilities such as the Metcalf Center for Science and Engineering, in 1983, the Rafik B. Hariri Building for the School of Management, in 1996, and the Boston University Photonics Center, which opened in 1997.

    Under Silber?s leadership, BU also forged deeper ties with the community, most notably by taking the unprecedented step of managing a failing Boston-area school system. The Boston University/Chelsea Partnership, established in 1988, brought new facilities, curriculum changes, and new policies for students, teachers, and administrators into a troubled system, with the goal of making Chelsea?s school?s ?a model for excellence in urban education.? The partnership, which provided the district with tutoring programs, early-childhood education, scholarships, and enrichment programs, was intended to last for a decade; it ended in 2008 after two. Silber also created the Boston Scholars Program in 1973?the largest such scholarship program in the country. In 1993, he founded the Boston University Academy, a college preparatory school for secondary school students.

    Silber served on the Kissinger Commission (the President?s National Bipartisan Commission on Central America), and was chair of the Massachusetts Board of Education, which during his tenure developed the first curriculum frameworks.

    Despite his success in raising the University?s profile, Silber?s direct, unguarded critiques of students and faculty made him an unpopular figure in some circles at points in his career. In 1976, unhappy with what Time magazine called his ?overpowering style in office? and a proposed budget cut that could include faculty positions, 10 deans and three-quarters of the Faculty Assembly called for his resignation?a move that the Board of Trustees voted down.

    His presidency was never again at stake, but Silber continued to draw public scrutiny over the years. He took a leave of absence from BU to run for governor of Massachusetts in 1990, and secured the Democratic nomination. His campaign was initially a success, but he failed to win over the old guard of the Democratic party, and ultimately lost to William Weld. After his return to the University, in 1993, the Massachusetts Attorney General investigated the finances of BU, and the University was asked to adjust its governance rules. In 1996, when he stepped down as president, he was named chancellor, maintaining an office on Bay State Road and continuing to live in BU-owned housing. In 2003, he was widely criticized for his role in selecting Daniel Goldin, a former administrator at NASA, as BU?s ninth president?and then dismissing him with a $1.3 million payout before Goldin took office.

    Silber?s role at BU diminished over the next few years, as Aram Chobanian (Hon.?06), the former provost of the Medical Campus and School of Medicine dean, served as president ad interim, then president, until Robert A. Brown, the former provost of MIT, was appointed the 10th president of Boston University in 2005. Silber continued to live on the BU campus, but turned his attention to other interests, such as sculpture (he completed a bas-relief of Wiesel), and architecture. He published a well-reviewed critique of modernist architecture in 2008, taking special exception to the work of Frank Gehry, titled Architecture of the Absurd. In December 2011, he finished a critical analysis of the work of the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, a project he began in 1954 when he was a graduate student and member of the junior faculty at Yale. The book, Kant?s Ethics: The Good, Freedom, and the Will (Walter de Gruyter, 2012), was published in May.

    In 2007, the University honored Silber with a gala tribute, featuring letters and presentations from colleagues, dignitaries, and friends. While many friends poked fun at the former president?s notorious frankness and occasional temper, others talked of his lesser-known kindness: letters and phone calls that came at times of illness or trouble, his habit of eating breakfast and dinner with his children every day, even at the most demanding moments of his career, and his long and loving relationship with his wife, Kathryn, who died in 2005.

    ?What I am most grateful for was the honor and privilege of serving for more than 30 years,? Silber said at the end of the evening. ?BU was one of the finest toys I was ever allowed to play with?a great toy with enormous potential, if you polished it up and gave it a few tools to make it run.?

    Silber is survived by six daughters, Rachel Devlin and Martha Hathaway, of Newton, Mass., Judith Ballan, of New York City, Alexandra Silber, of Carlsbad, Calif., Ruth Belmonte, of State College, Pa., and Caroline Lavender, of Atlanta, Ga., a son, Charles Hiett, of Hot Springs, Ark., 26 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Phyllis Silber, of San Antonio, Tex., two nieces, and a great-niece and a great-nephew.

    Funeral services will be private. A memorial service will take place in the near future. BU Today will provide details when they become available.
