Roadside bomb kills 10 civilians in Afghanistan

KABUL (Reuters) - A roadside bomb exploded under a passenger van in southern Afghanistan on Thursday, killing 10 people, most of them women and children, government officials said.

Eight people were wounded in the blast in the Deh Rawood district of Uruzgan province, President Hamid Karzai's office said in a statement. The Interior Ministry said 14 people were wounded.

"Innocent peoples' blood will not be wasted and terrorists will be shamed in this world and hereafter," Karzai said in the statement.

Violence has been increasing across the country as an end of 2014 deadline approaches for most foreign combat troops to leave, putting the 350,000-strong Afghan security forces in control.

Civilians have borne the brunt of much of the violence in the 11-year conflict. A roadside bomb in the relatively peaceful province of Farah killed 17 people and wounded nine on November 16.

Most of the victims in Farah were also women and children, driving in a van as part of a wedding procession.

Three people were killed and more than 90 wounded on Friday, including several foreign soldiers, in a truck bombing in Wardak province near Kabul. Most of the casualties were civilians.

Scientists identify depression and anxiety biomarker in youths

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered a cognitive biomarker -- a biological indicator of a disease -- for young adolescents who are at high risk of developing depression and anxiety. Their findings were published today, 28 November, in the journal PLOS ONE.

The test for the unique cognitive biomarker, which can be done on a computer, could be used as an inexpensive tool to screen adolescents for common emotional mental illnesses. As the cognitive biomarker may appear prior to the symptoms of depression and anxiety, early intervention (which has proven to be one of the most effective ways of combatting mental illness) could then be initiated.

For the study, 15-18 year old participants underwent genetic testing and environmental assessment, an exercise which would currently be too expensive and take too long to use as a widespread method of screening. The adolescents were then given a computer test to gauge how they process emotional information. The test had the participants evaluate whether words were positive, negative or neutral (examples included 'joyful' for positive, 'failure' for negative, and 'range' for neutral).

Those adolescents with a variation of one gene (the short form of the serotonin transporter) as well as exposure to intermittent family arguments for longer than six months and violence between parents before the age of six were shown to have marked difficulty in evaluating the emotion within the words, indicating an inability to process emotional information. Previous research associated a maladjusted perception and response to emotions, as seen here, with a significantly increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Professor Ian Goodyer, Principal Investigator on the study from the University of Cambridge, said: "Whether we succumb to anxiety and depression depends in part on our tendencies to think well or poorly of ourselves at troubled times. How it comes about that some people see the 'glass half full' and think positively whereas other see the 'glass half empty' and think negatively about themselves at times of stress is not known.

"The evidence is that both our genes and our early childhood experiences contribute to such personal thinking styles. Before there are any clinical symptoms of depression or anxiety, this test reveals a deficient ability to efficiently and effectively perceive emotion processes in some teenagers -- a biomarker for low resilience which may lead to mental illnesses."

The scientists hope that their research could lead to developing inexpensive cognitive tests to screen for these illnesses, particularly in people identified as being at high social and genetic risk.

Dr Matthew Owens from the University of Cambridge added: "Having difficulty in processing emotions is likely to contribute to misunderstanding other people's intentions and can make individuals emotionally vulnerable. This research opens up the possibility of identifying individuals at greatest risk and helping them with techniques to process emotions more easily or training them to respond more adaptively to negative feedback."

Professor Goodyer further stated: "These types of cognitive biomarker can also be used to aid therapeutics by helping to determine which treatments are likely to work best for types of depressions and anxiety disorders. This is important, as although we have good treatments we do not yet know what works best for whom."

Professor Barbara Sahakian, a co-author on the paper from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge said: "The way we perceive and respond to emotions affects our resilience and whether we succumb to depression and other maladaptive ways of thinking. Using the biomarker identified in this study, it is possible to develop a screening programme to identify those at greatest risk."

Mental health problems are common in young people with approximately 10% of children (aged 5-16 years old) in Great Britain being assessed as having a mental disorder of some kind including conduct disorder, emotional disorder or hyperactivity. In addition, adolescence is a critical period for the development of depressions.

Keepin' it real fake pay peanuts, get a WPflavored lemon

Either this latest KIRF contender apes Windows Phone to a seriously piratical degree, or someone has simply chopped in a screengrab from an HTC device. Either way, the aptly-named Lemon T109 could at least have tried mimicking the latest version of Redmond's mobile OS instead of Mango. The handset, which has just popped up in India for the equivalent of $54, accepts a pair of SIMs and boasts a 3.7-inch HVGA capacitive touch display. There's a "long" 1,200mAh battery that helps fuel features like the King Movie Player, an automatic call recorder and a 1.3-megapixel snapper circa 2004. We're not sure what the "PC Tablet" accessory refers to, but the free wristwatch on offer could possibly help sweeten the citrusy deal -- especially since the other core specs are MIA. Zebra, mini horse corralled after NYC street jaunt

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City can be like a zoo sometimes, but a zebra running wild through the streets is not something you ordinarily see.

The Staten Island Advance reports (http://bit.ly/Yr7soL) a zebra and a miniature horse were spotted trotting through a shopping center parking lot Wednesday morning in Staten Island.

Metropolitan Drape & Blind owner Zachary Osher saw the runaway equines and shared his video with the newspaper. He says the animals ran down a street and narrowly escaped being hit by a car. He says two men in dark suits ran after them with lassoes.

A police spokesman says the animals were corralled and returned to a petting zoo.

Entertaining Evenings In for Mum and the Family

With family budgets increasingly squeezed, ideas for inexpensive evenings at home for mum and the whole family are always welcome.? And sometimes busy mums just need time for themselves to relax and re-energise.? So on those evenings when the rest of the family are out, watching TV, or the kids are doing their homework, how about planning that special evening of pure self-indulgence?? Make sure that your time to relax isn?t interrupted by cries of ?Mum, where I can I find the ?.??? Tell the family that this time is yours and it?s sacred!

Set up the bathroom for a pamper evening, with a scented candle, and favourite tracks playing on the iPod.? Enjoy a wonderful relax in a deep bath with some special smellies, and a home-made face mask of honey, pumpkin pulp and cider vinegar to clarify and rejuvenate your skin.? Reward yourself with your favourite entertainment ? a great game of online bingo with Jackpotjoy, with the excitement of big cash prizes to win, and friends to meet in the bingo chat rooms.? Or re-connect with the important people in your life who you?ve lost touch with, maybe because they are living far away.? Set up a free talk session on Skype, and enjoy an evening catching up with old friends, learning about their lives, and sharing news.

With mum thoroughly re-energised, now?s the time to plan for a family evening in together.? Parents always welcome the idea of inexpensive entertainment, but the kids might take more convincing.? If you suggest an entertaining evening at home, there are likely to be groans and exclamations of ?That?s so boring!?? So here are a couple of ideas to get you started:

Create a restaurant at home.?? It?s important to involve everyone from the start in planning a special family evening, as their input will be needed to decide on the menu (don?t worry if there are some whacky food combinations in there), table design and entertainment.? Delegate the creation of an entertainment piece to the kids, with suggestions for skits or a disco or even karaoke.? Involve them not only in menu decisions but also in the cooking, and if you can find some paper chef hats and aprons at a local store, even better, to add the finishing touch.? This makes for a wonderfully silly and fun evening with all the family involved.

Family history evening.? Spend an evening creating an album for the whole family that can be added to from time to time, with each member choosing their favourite photos and then being asked to contribute any memories that they have of that time in their life.? Although there may be initial protests, kids secretly love looking at photos of their younger selves, and there are always great laughs to be had from baby pictures.?? Photos of mum and dad?s wedding, or parents and grandparents in their youth often produce gasps of astonishment ? ?I can?t believe the length of your hair, dad!?? Add in other ideas, such as asking each family member to tell the story of the funniest/most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to them.

Ignite Recruits New Finance Head - Zacks.com

Ignite Restaurant Group Inc. (IRG - Snapshot Report) recently revealed that it has appointed Michael J. Dixon as the chief financial officer (CFO) and Senior Vice President, effective January 2, 2013. Dixon will replace Jeffery L. Rager, who put down his papers for other prospects.

Dixon has donned many important roles in his illustrious career. Previously, he was the Senior Vice President and CFO at Pinkberry - a renowned food-chain in the premium frozen yogurt category with 220 outlets. Prior to that, he held the same posts at The Cheesecake Factory Inc. (CAKE - Analyst Report) from 2006 to 2008. He also acted as Controller at The Cheesecake Factory from 2000 to 2004.

Dixon?s list of achievements does not end there. He was the Vice President and Controller with Petsmart.com in 2000, and was the Director of Finance and Business Development at Walt Disney Co. (DIS - Analyst Report) during 1994-2000. Dixon also has an experience of nine years with a predecessor firm to PricewaterhouseCoopers, Coopers & Lybrand. All the past experience coupled with his recent term with Brinker International Inc. (EAT - Analyst Report) as a board member vouch for his excellence.

Taking into account his vast experience of 12 years in the food service industry, Dixon can easily be labeled as a veteran in that sector. Considering his vast know-how about business development, public accounting as well as his prior experience as a financial leader with leading retailers, we believe that he will likely provide meaningful support to Ignite Restaurant?s growth and profitability, going forward.

However, Ignite Restaurants? present scenario is not very encouraging as evident by the earnings misses in the last two quarters. The average earnings surprise is (25.00%) over the trailing four quarters. Hence, the new role for Dixon, the CFO at Ignite, invests him with additional responsibility in a sluggish business environment.?

Ignite Restaurant currently carries a Zacks #4 Rank, which translates into a short-term ?Sell? rating. We are maintaining our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock.

Common drug increases deaths in atrial fibrillation patients

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Digoxin, a drug widely used to treat heart disease, increases the possibility of death when used by patients with a common heart rhythm problem ? atrial fibrillation (AF), according to new study findings by University of Kentucky researchers. The results have been published in the European Heart Journal, and raises serious concerns about the expansive use of this long-standing heart medication in patients with AF.

UK researchers led by Dr. Samy Claude Elayi, associate professor of medicine at UK HealthCare's Gill Heart Institute, analyzed data from 4,060 AF patients enrolled in the landmark Atrial Fibrillation Follow-up Investigation of Rhythm Management (AFFIRM) trial. This analysis was intended to determine the relationship between digoxin and deaths in this group of patients with atrial fibrillation, and whether digoxin was directly responsible for some deaths.

"These findings raise important concerns about the safety of digoxin, one of the oldest and most controversial heart drugs," said Dr. Steven E. Nissen, chair of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. "Although considered obsolete by some authorities, digoxin is still widely used. A thorough review by the FDA is warranted to determine whether regulatory action is needed, including stronger warnings about the use of digoxin in patients with atrial fibrillation. "

Digoxin is extracted from the foxglove plant and it helps the heart beat more strongly, and at a slower heart rate. It is commonly used in AF patients and in patients with heart failure. However, it can be problematic to use successfully as there is a narrow dose range at which it is effective, and beyond which it can be dangerous.

Though digoxin has been used by physicians treating AF for decades, until now, there has been limited evidence demonstrating the effect of digoxin in patients with this condition. "Digoxin in AF patients has hardly been studied," said Elayi. "The main prospective randomised controlled trials available with digoxin were performed in patients with heart failure and sinus rhythm, and routinely excluded AF patients."

The results of the analysis found that digoxin was associated with a 41 percent increase in deaths from any cause after controlling for other medications and risk factors. An increase in deaths occurred regardless of gender or the presence or absence of underlying heart failure. Digoxin was also associated with a 35 percent increase in deaths from cardiovascular causes, and a 61 percent increase in deaths from arrhythmias or problems with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat.

"Within five years of use, one additional AF patient out of six taking digoxin ? compared to those not on digoxin in the AFFIRM trial? will die from any cause," Elayi said. "One additional patient out of eight will die from cardiovascular causes, and one additional patient out of 16 will die from arrhythmias.

"This study calls into question the widespread use of digoxin in patients with AF, particularly when used for controlling AF rate in a similar way as in the AFFIRM trial," Elayi said. "These findings suggest that physicians should try to control a patient's heart rate by using alternatives such as beta-blockers or calcium blockers ,as a first line treatment.

"If digoxin is used, prescribers should use a low dose with careful clinical follow up, evaluate potential drug interactions when starting new medications, and monitor digoxin levels."

In addition, patients should also be aware of potential toxicity and see their physicians immediately in specific clinical situations, he said. For instance, if they experience increasing nausea, vomiting, palpitations or syncope, as those may precede arrhythmic death, Elayi added.

The researchers say that the mechanism by which digoxin increases deaths among patients is unclear. Deaths from classic cardiovascular causes -- whether or not they are due to arrhythmia -- can partly but not entirely explain it. This suggests there must be some additional mechanism that remains to be identified, said Elayi.

"Our study underscores the importance of reassessing the role of digoxin in the contemporary management of AF in patients with or without HF," concluded the authors in their paper. "There is a need for further studies of the drug's use, particularly in systolic heart failure patients and AF -- patients that would, in theory, benefit the most from digoxin."

Twin Car Bombs Rock Damascus

A pair of car bombs killed 34 people in Damascus, Syria, on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. A pair of vehicles packed with explosives exploded in the suburb of Jaramana in a parking lot as people were arriving for work near commercial buildings.

The United Nations humanitarian chief Valerie Amos also accused the Syrian government of firing mortar bombs near the Jordan border to stop refugees who were fleeing the civil war, according to Reuters.

Here's the latest information on the Syrian civil war.

* The car bombs were planted in a Christian and Druse area, resulting in six commercial buildings being damaged and injuring 83 people in addition to those killed. There have been conflicting numbers of deaths, as a report from the Observatory for Human Rights claimed the death toll was 29.

* Suicide bombings in downtown Damascus have usually included the homes of wealthy Syrians, army officers, security officials, and regime officials.

* No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

* Amos spoke out against the mortar attacks against refugees, according to Reuters, saying that "we need the agreement by all those involved in the conflict to ensure they will not in any way bomb or shell or fight (refugees)."

* Amos said that despite a call to care for the 2.5 million internally displaced Syrian people, only 50 percent of that need had been funded.

* Food has been supplied to 1.5 million people through the World Food Programme and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, Amos said. "We would like to be able to increase that to 2.5 million people but we do not have the capacity through the partners we are able to use," she said according to Reuters.

* On Tuesday, U.S. State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland was asked whether if reports of Russia flying currency into Syria to support the regime would soften sanctions. Nuland noted that "we've been very clear, both publicly and privately, how we feel about any country, Russia included, supporting the Assad regime in any way. And we will continue to make those points. And it doesn't simply go to the question of military support; it also goes for any kind of economic or political support."

* Nuland was also asked if Russia and the U.S. were discussing a post-Assad government and said she had no details of that discussion, referring instead to the Friends of the Syrian People group of countries for that conversation.

Bankruptcy Court Warns on WARN

Judge Martin Glenn of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York recently dismissed a putative class action complaint filed on behalf of former employees of MF Global that alleged the chapter 11 trustee for MF Global Holdings Ltd. and certain of its subsidiaries and the SIPA trustee for MF Global Inc. failed to provide sufficient notice under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (the ?WARN Act?) and the New York version of the WARN Act prior to terminating such employees.? In its memorandum opinion and order, the bankruptcy court considered whether the SIPA trustee and chapter 11 trustee were ?employers? for purposes of the WARN Act and the NY WARN Act or ?liquidating fiduciaries? who are excepted from the obligation to comply with advance notice requirements under the WARN statutes, in which case the actions of the trustees would be protected.

On October 31, 2011, pursuant to the Securities Investor Protection Act, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York entered the order commencing the liquidation of MF Global Inc., the U.S. broker-dealer arm of the MF Global enterprise, and appointed James W. Giddens as the SIPA trustee.? (Under SIPA section 78eee, upon the grant by the district court of the ?protective decree? and the appointment of the SIPA trustee, the liquidation proceeding is removed to the bankruptcy court.)? SIPA section 78fff(a), among other things, requires a SIPA trustee to liquidate the broker-dealer business.? That same day, the broker-dealer?s parent company, MF Global Holdings Ltd., and its affiliated financing company, MF Global Finance USA Inc., filed voluntary chapter 11 petitions.? Approximately two weeks later, on November 11, 2011, the putative class members were dismissed from their employment.? On November 21, 2011, the debtors and the statutory creditors? committee filed a joint emergency motion seeking the appointment of a chapter 11 trustee, which the court granted a week later.

The only purpose of the SIPA proceeding for the MF broker-dealer (which employed the bulk of the terminated MF employees) could be liquidation.? The stated purpose of the chapter 11 filings, however, was less clear. ?Although the first day affidavit and the statements at the first day hearing indicated that the MF Global chapter 11 cases were filed with the hope of reorganizing, these statements conflicted with those made in the emergency motion seeking the appointment of a chapter 11 trustee ?to reorganize and/or liquidate the [d]ebtors? assets for the benefit of the . . . estates,? which also stated that ?[t]he primary objective for the duration of the chapter 11 cases is the orderly wind-down of the [d]ebtors? various assets.?? The bankruptcy court observed, ?With the appointment of the Chapter 11 Trustee on November 28, 2011, it became clear that the only possible outcome for the chapter 11 [d]ebtors was liquidation.? But between October 31, 2011 and November 22, 2011, there is nothing in the record to establish that the chapter 11 [d]ebtors intended to liquidate.?

Having established the differing original objectives of the SIPA proceeding and the chapter 11 cases, Judge Glenn then considered whether the trustees were ?employers? for the purposes of the WARN statutes.? Both trustees relied upon the preamble to the explanatory WARN Act Regulations issued by the Secretary of the Department of Labor to exclude themselves from the definition of ?employer.?? As a matter of law, the bankruptcy court concluded that the MF broker-dealer was liquidating when the layoffs occurred because the SIPA trustee was empowered by law only to liquidate the business, and as such, the SIPA trustee was a ?liquidating fiduciary? and did not fall within the definition of ?employer.?? Accordingly, the SIPA trustee was excepted from the obligation to comply with the advance notice requirements under the WARN statutes.

Although the bankruptcy court also granted the chapter 11 trustee?s motion to dismiss, it did so without prejudice and without basing its decision on the ?liquidating fiduciary? principle.? Unlike the SIPA trustee?s motion to dismiss, disputed issues of fact existed with respect to the chapter 11 debtors.? Moreover, the class action complaint itself did not allege whether the debtors were seeking to reorganize or to liquidate.? Having concluded that the allegations in the complaint were deficient, the court granted the chapter 11 trustee?s motion to dismiss, but also granted the putative class representatives leave to amend their complaint within thirty days.? The bankruptcy court noted, however, that any subsequent amendment of the complaint would not preclude the court from dismissing the amended complaint based on the ?liquidating fiduciary? principle.

Thielmann reminds (or perhaps warns) debtors and their professionals that the interplay between the Bankruptcy Code and various federal and state statutes can be complicated and often ill-defined.? Moreover, what may appear to be innocuous, generic statements made in first day pleadings may have implications later.?? Unless a debtor-entity is excepted from the definition of ?employer? pursuant to the WARN statutes, a debtor (or its trustee) is warned to WARN.

Disclosure:? Although Weil is not involved in the WARN litigation, we represent the Administrators in certain of the proceedings relating to MF Global?s UK subsidiaries, including its UK broker-dealer.

Camille Grammer Undergoing Annual Cancer Screening Tests ...

WENN

By Jen Heger - Radar Assistant Managing Editor

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, Camille Grammer is undergoing annual aggressive cancer screening tests because she is a carrier of a genetic mutation of several forms of the disease and believes that early detection is the best prevention, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

"I am a carrier of the BRCA 2 gene and I had myself tested after my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer several years ago," Grammer tells RadarOnline.comexclusively. "I'm currently undergoing my yearly cancer screening tests because I believe that early detection is the best prevention. I will be having my mammogram, colonoscopy and endoscopy in the next week. I have already had my annual blood tests and tissue samples, and so far, everything looks good."

PHOTOS: Kelsey & Kayte In Miami

According to Cancer.org, the BRCA 2 gene isknown as "a tumor suppressor...In normal?cells,?BRCA1?and?BRCA2?help ensure the stability of the cell?s genetic material (DNA) and help prevent uncontrolled cell growth. Mutation of these genes has been linked to the development of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.?A woman?s lifetime risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer is greatly increased if she inherits a harmful mutation in?BRCA1?or?BRCA.?Such a woman has an increased risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer at an early age (before?menopause) and often has multiple, close family members who have been?diagnosed?with these diseases."

Grammer's mother was diagnosed with stage two ovarian cancer several years ago, and the blond beauty tells Radar, "We got lucky with my mom because it was caught rather early, at stage two. She had a hysterectomy, and did very well. She has since gotten a different form of bladder and kidney cancer, but she is doing very well and has a positive attitude. To see my mother struggle with this and do so well is just such an inspiration to me. My mom encouraged me to get tested, and I did. No, it's not fun doing these tests every year, but I firmly believe that knowledge and early detection is the best prevention."

PHOTOS: Camille Films Real Housewives

While Camille is dealing with her cancer screening tests her ex-husband, Kelsey Grammer still hasn't signed off on their financial divorce settlement. "I don't have a lot to say about that, it is what it is, and I have a great lawyer and it will work itself out," Camille says.

In the meantime, Camille is focused on her health and wants to use her public platform to "raise awareness about all forms of cancer. I think so many people are scared of getting tested because of fear of the unknown, and I understand that. But once you get into the doctor's office and get the tests done, the more peace of mind you can have.

"Knowledge is power and I would encourage all women to get mammograms when their doctors tell them to. As women, we tend to put ourselves last in our lives as we are focused on our kids and family. However, I'm doing this so I will be around to watch my kids grow up. It's for them truly that I'm doing this, I love my kids so much."

She revealed that the programme did indeed deliver on its guarantees. She also discovered that it gives back to those taking part a renewed sense of themselves, improved psychological clearness, focus, better emotional balance and an increased capacity for joy. Word soon got out, and Leslie found herself deluged with requests for info concerning how to do the programme.

Four years on, Leslie Kenton's Cura Romana, the first day-by-day steered, online program for health and weight control, psychological clearness. As Leslie asserts : ?If somebody mentioned that you could become lean for life, radiantly healthy and protected from early aging, you would potentially assume they were making it up. Science has already begun to demonstrate that this is so. And, now, thanks to Cura Romana this is no longer a secret available only to a select few.?. There are two parts to Leslie Kenton's Cura Romana, a rapid weight loss custom followed by a unique period of Consolidation.

It's the consolidation part of the program that makes Cura Romana's gifts last. Into it has gone 25 years of listening to and working with folks in workshops and lectures around the world to make a program that works for all. Consolidation supplies the tools, methodologies, information and inspiration critical to remain slim, healthy, and protect from early ageing.

And looks to be the key to the long-term psychological, emotional and non secular benefits the programme brings. Leslie claims : ?On Cura Romana you get step-by-step assistance to move outside the agony of past screw ups, frustrations and self-criticism towards a lean, healthful body, high level well-being and a capability to live life from the center of your unique being.?. Leslie describes Cura Romana with the phrase ?Change Your Body and Transfigure Your Life.? Concentrate. This should be you.

Family Friendly Christmas Party Ideas ? Celebrations at Home

I?m excited to finally share this project I worked on with Urbanity Studios. I spoke with them several months ago about styling a party around one of their invitations, but they also wanted to highlight the fact that they can customize them through colors and wording, and offer coordinating pieces as well. I decided to style the same basic party in 3 different color schemes and I?ll be sharing each one separately.

Today is our traditional color palate of red and green, but our decorative details are whimsical and playful for a Family Friendly Christmas party. Read on for the details, and to get your FREE downloadable tags that match this set?

Get the Look:

  • This entire party was inspired by the patchwork Christmas tree invitation with it?s whimsical tree and string of ornaments graphic. Send out invitations soon, and use their coordinating address label wraps for a completed look.
  • Since ?whimsy? is the word of the day, I used dots and stripes throughout the decor. It doesn?t get more whimsical than dots! This also appeals to our younger guests at this family party.
  • White fudge dipped Oreos are dressed up with decorations from the baking aisle ? a simple trick anyone can do, and get that ?designer? look.
  • Urbanity Studios can provide coordinating signs & menus for your party too. I used a small sign to frame a menu for the sweets table ? an alternative to using individual food labels.

  • This easy menu consists of cupcakes, cheesecake mousse parfaits, white dipped Oreos, white truffles, powdered donuts, and various candies. Spoons for the parfaits are dressed up with tiny Santa hats found at the craft store.
  • I made favor boxes out of large matchboxes, and wrapped them in scrapbook paper. A coordinating sticker from Urbanity Studios tops them off in style. Fill them up with small candies or a small ornament.
  • Serving a red tinted punch in an apothecary jar keeps the party?s colors uninterrupted. Just use a punch bowl ladle to scoop it up.
  • Put your Christmas packages to work for you and let them decorate your party space. Stack boxes and place them in nooks and corners to add brightness.
  • The backdrop was designed to resemble the invitation with it?s hanging ornaments. I used ornament wall clings and ?hung? them with thin ribbon. A thicker ribbon is used like a swag to frame out the entire dessert table.

This was such a fun project to work on and I can?t wait to share the other 2 party design with you. Urbanity Studios has a wonderful gift to you as well. They are offering FREE Christmas tags that coordinate with each of the 3 parties I styled.? Just use a hole punch to loop a ribbon through, and tie them on. ? Get the downloads here.

(AP) ? A day before South Korean rap sensation Psy brings his "Gangnam Style" to Thailand, nearly 100 inmates have danced to the hit behind barbed wire and bars in a Bangkok prison.

Seventy out of 4,500 prisoners at Bangkok Remand Prison put on a show Tuesday for the media and corrections department executives after competing in a "Gangnam Style" dance contest last week.

Officials said the program was to relieve inmates' stress and help them keep fit.

Psy's "Gangnam Style" this month became the most watched video ever on YouTube. It has spawned hundreds of parodies and tribute videos, including a popular one earlier this year by members of the Thai navy.

Psy will perform in Thailand on Wednesday night ? his first show in Asia outside of South Korea.

Does 'LOL' Really Mean 'Lucifer Our Lord'?

When we "laugh out loud" online, are we really praying to Satan, the prince of darkness himself?

The answer is no, but an image posted by a user on the social news site Reddit is warning the Internet otherwise.

According to the directive, which is meant to be shared "with Christians," the classic and ubiquitous "LOL" acronym stands for "Lucifer our lord," something the image's creator doesn't find funny at all.

"BEWARE: Stop using the abbreviation 'LOL,'" the hastily made image that invokes the same qualities as a Westboro Baptist Church sign reads. "'LOL stands for 'Lucifer our Lord.' Satanists end their prayers by saying Lucifer our Lord,' in short, "LOL.' Every time you type 'LOL' you are endorsing Satan."

If?the warning, posted by Redditor DkryptX, in the "atheism" subreddit, were true, there would be a lot of Satanists on Twitter.

"I met the prime minister in overalls lol," pop star Justin Bieber?tweeted from Instagram?in one such example. Columnist Roland Martin also has a habit of ending his tweets with "LOL."

"Can someone please tell him that YOLO means 'Youth Obeying Lucifer's Orders?"" joked another Reddit user. Fans of the rapper Drake might disagree. The former star of the TV series "Degrassi: The Next Generation" popularized the "you only live once" acronym recently.

Still, the image warns "Do not use 'LOL ever again!"

Other sarcastic comments on?Reddit?repurposed "swag" to mean "Satan's wishes are granted," "ROFL" as "rise, our father Lucifer," and "BRB" as "Beelzebub rules below." Who knew that saving keystrokes was such a devilish pursuit?

To most people, however, ROFL means "rolling on floor laughing" and BRB is simply "be right back."

For language prudes, the outing of these "real" definitions may come as a relief. According to commenters the Reddit thread, WTF isn't an offensive question at all. It really means "worship the fallen."

5 Reasons Detachment Can Save Your Relationship

You want to keep learning about each other, acting as sponges to the other?s every word and affection.?

So, how in the world can detachment actually strengthen an intensely loving and growing relationship?

Detachment is one of the most important aspects in achieving true, profound fulfillment. Believe it or not, practicing detachment while remaining vulnerable will benefit you in remarkable ways.?

Here are some of the ways detachment can help you:?

1. You'll worry less.?

Worry can be seen as somewhat of a wasteful emotion, similar to fear. Both are negative, anxious feelings attached to thoughts that do not exist because they have not yet occurred. Why waste your precious mental energy on something that hasn?t even happened yet? If you worry because of past experiences, remind yourself that this (and every moment from now on) is a brand new, unrelated experience. Learn from the past, but don?t allow it to hinder your future. Detach yourself from any fear or worry, express gratitude for the present, and watch your tension and anxiety fall away.

2.?You'll accept more.?

When you detach yourself from ?what should be? or ?what could be? and focus on what is, you open a whole new door into the splendor of acceptance. Take a moment to acknowledge what you hope for the future, and then release the thought into the universe. Have faith in the direction that your life (and your love) will go. Simply remember: What will be, will be... and no amount of dwelling will change that.

3. You'll have increased productivity.?

With less time spent on burdensome thoughts or tasks, it leaves more time to live your life (and savor your love). When the mind is swirling with what-ifs and worry, it takes away from enjoying this very moment. It?s amazing how much time is lost on ?shoulda-coulda? thoughts. Realize when these thoughts begin to consume your mind and ask yourself, how is this affecting me in this very instant? How is this affecting my relationship? Can I be doing something else right now to benefit myself??

You will see that by allowing your mind to drown in too much thought, you are only wasting the time you have. Stop brooding and start living. You will thank yourself later.

4. You'll achieve peace of mind.?

The instant you recognize what detachment really means and how it feels to practice it in your daily life, it will feel like a huge breath of fresh air. You will feel empowered, enlightened, and grateful. The beautiful thing about this is how it can change your life: Purely by redirecting the thoughts in your mind from obsessive and concerning, to appreciative and blissful. Your face will shine and you will be more pleasurable to be around... And who doesn?t want to be in love with someone who exudes love and inner peace?

5. Experience more love.

I deeply believe in the Oxygen-Mask Theory in all aspects of life: you must truly love and accept yourself first, and know you are deserving of it, in order to provide your best self in any relationship with anyone else. Otherwise, you are not only being unfair to yourself, but unfair to your counterpart. Just as your sweetheart deserves to be happy and unconditionally loved, so do you. Remind yourself of that every day.

Detaching ourselves from certain emotions, especially those intensified within a romantic relationship, becomes much easier once you realize that emotions are only temporary. Life is a series of change; this includes the change of your significant other from who he (or she) is now, to whom he or she will be in ten years.?

Circumstances are temporary, frustration during difficult times is temporary, and even expectations are temporary. Unconditional love and acceptance are the only worthwhile constants. Choose to focus on the constants and detach from ever-changing emotions, and see your love life (or even single life) flourish more than ever before.

Reasons Why You Shouldn't Partner in Your Real Estate Business

real estate partner

?I think this shade of tan looks best.?

?No way. This shade of tan one tab over looks so much better!?

Although a bit silly and overly simplified, the concept is one that?absolutely?needs to be well thought out before you go into real estate. The concept being:

Do you want 51% of the ?say? in your business decisions, or do you want 50%?

There are many reasons why at some point in your career, a partner may be wise or needed, but my personal opinion is that unless you absolutely need a partner, take the journey alone!

Personality Check

The first thing you need to do is take an honest?assessment?of yourself,?particularly, your personality. This could very well be the thing that creates major bumps in your ride. I won?t go quite as far as saying it would END your ride, but depending on the situation, it could get pretty darn close.

  • Are you a control freak?
  • Are you?obsessive?compulsive about details?
  • Are you great with numbers? Do you enjoy numbers?
  • Do you know how to pound in a nail?

Whether you answered ?yes? or ?no? to any of these questions doesn?t matter, what matters is what you do with this information. There are plenty of other questions to ask, but these will serve as a guideline for some examples.

Can I Compensate, but Avoid Partnership?

After you have the first round of questions out of the way, you can begin to try and structure how your business?management?will work. We?ll use my personal answer to these questions, and how I applied it.

  • Are you a control freak??- Yes
  • Are you?obsessive?compulsive about details??- No
  • Are you great with numbers? Do you enjoy numbers??- Yes
  • Do you know how to pound in a nail??- No

I love control and being an engineer by degree, I love numbers. I?m okay with details, but not great and when it comes to construction, it?s?embarrassing.

Does that mean I need I need to partner up with someone to overcome my?deficiencies? No!

I compensate for this by using a project manager and an assistant whom I pay?separately. ?Yes, I could give them equity stake and then not have to pay them; however, I want equity for myself, and more importantly, I want CONTROL. It just fits my personality.

If you?re not very good with numbers, find someone who is, and create an?arrangement?with them. ?If you can help me analyze my deal and crunch the numbers, I?ll pay you x-amount.? Sure it is money out of your pocket and an expense, but it keeps you in control, and you?ll find it is well worth it.

Can I Temporarily Partner, but then Avoid?

The one instance where you truly have no other option to partner is if you have no capital. Yea, yea, ?yea ? I know about all those ?no money needed? real estate strategies, including wholesaling. I have no?empirical?data to back this up, but I?m guessing for every 10 people who approach the wholesaling strategy or ?no money down,? maybe 1 or 2 actually survive as real estate investors. If the odds of success were higher than that, I sure wouldn?t struggle as much as I do to find ?true? wholesalers. (sorry, went off on a tangent there, let?s get back on track!)

If you love control, I would try and arrange a partnership on JUST THAT DEAL. Not a partnership for your overall company. This way, you can get access to the capital you need, but when things are done, still have the option to?continue?on your separate path.

Do you have capital, but not enough for rehab costs? Partner up with a contractor. In this case, you definitely only want it as a ?per deal? basis as in the future you can just include the contractor in your budget, but if you?re short on cash, this is a justifiable reason to partner up.

Avoid this Trap

?We?ve been friends since middle school. Let?s go into real estate together.? Uggggg? T-minus x amount of months before business and friendship go sour.

Yes, I know. You know of partnerships that work (same with me), but when I personally stop and think about it, I can think of double the amount of partnerships that have just failed.

If you find yourself with capital, but are inching?towards?a partnership out of ?fear-of-the-unknown? and using the shield of ?This person is my friend/family, that?s why I want them as my partner? as an excuse, then you need to step back and truly think twice about it. I?m not saying this is impossible to accomplish (my brother-in-law and his brother have run a successful?lawn-care?business for numerous years), but what I AM saying is this?

If the only reason for wanting a partnership is for personal comfort, DO NOT DO IT.

If you have the capital and want to work with a person, then by all means work with them, just pay them separately though instead of giving up 50% equity in your business. Don?t fall into the trap of ?my strong friendship/family ties will overcome any difficulties.? When actual money is on the line, it has a way to completely dismantling those ?ties.? Again, it may work, but why RISK IT if you already have the needed supplies (capital) to get started.

Step outside of your comfort zone. Push yourself a bit. You?ll be glad you did when you can look at the other person in the room and say, ?It?s my company and my decision, so we?re going with MY shade of tan.?

Former UFC fighter loses his house to fire on Thanksgiving

Former UFC fighter Dennis Hallman lost his home to a fire on Thanksgiving. The lightweight who has been fighting since 1996 shared the sad news on his Facebook page.

Sad thanks giving for me and my family. My house burned down early this AM. Thank God no one was hurt and I have that to be thankful for. Something like this makes my recent direction change all the harder...the one person that could make me feel okay about everything is no longer here. When God wants you to have a fresh start sometimes he really wants to make his point clear.

He and his family were unhurt, but a report on a fire at Hallman's address said it amounts to more than $180,000 in damage. The first floor was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene.

It's been a rough stretch for the 36-year-old fighter. He blew weight for his UFC on FX 5 bout with Thiago Tavares. The bout was canceled after Hallman said he was not fit to fight and dealing with personal issues. He was then cut from the UFC.

Thank you, Fighter's Only.

Egypt's Mursi faces judicial revolt over new powers

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi faced a rebellion from judges who accused him on Saturday of expanding his powers at their expense, deepening a crisis that has triggered violence in the street and exposed the country's deep divisions.

The Judges' Club, a body representing judges across Egypt, called for a strike during a meeting interrupted with chants demanding the "downfall of the regime" - the rallying cry in the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak last year.

Mursi's political opponents and supporters, representing the divide between newly empowered Islamists and their critics, called for rival demonstrations on Tuesday over a decree that has triggered concern in the West.

Issued late on Thursday, it marks an effort by Mursi to consolidate his influence after he successfully sidelined Mubarak-era generals in August. The decree defends from judicial review decisions taken by Mursi until a new parliament is elected in a vote expected early next year.

It also shields the Islamist-dominated assembly writing Egypt's new constitution from a raft of legal challenges that have threatened the body with dissolution, and offers the same protection to the Islamist-controlled upper house of parliament.

Egypt's highest judicial authority, the Supreme Judicial Council, said the decree was an "unprecedented attack" on the independence of the judiciary. The Judges' Club, meeting in Cairo, called on Mursi to rescind it.

That demand was echoed by prominent opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei. "There is no room for dialogue when a dictator imposes the most oppressive, abhorrent measures and then says 'let us split the difference'," he said.

"I am waiting to see, I hope soon, a very strong statement of condemnation by the U.S., by Europe and by everybody who really cares about human dignity," he said in an interview with Reuters and the Associated Press.

More than 300 people were injured on Friday as protests against the decree turned violent. There were attacks on at least three offices belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood, the movement that propelled Mursi to power.

POLARISATION

Liberal, leftist and socialist parties called a big protest for Tuesday to force Mursi to row back on a move they say has exposed the autocratic impulses of a man once jailed by Mubarak.

In a sign of the polarization in the country, the Muslim Brotherhood called its own protests that day to support the president's decree.

Mursi also assigned himself new authority to sack the prosecutor general, who was appointed during the Mubarak era, and appoint a new one. The dismissed prosecutor general, Abdel Maguid Mahmoud, was given a hero's welcome at the Judges' Club.

In open defiance of Mursi, Ahmed al-Zind, head of the club, introduced Mahmoud by his old title.

The Mursi administration has defended the decree on the grounds that it aims to speed up a protracted transition from Mubarak's rule to a new system of democratic government.

Analysts say it reflects the Brotherhood's suspicion towards sections of a judiciary unreformed from Mubarak's days.

"It aims to sideline Mursi's enemies in the judiciary and ultimately to impose and head off any legal challenges to the constitution," said Elijah Zarwan, a fellow with The European Council on Foreign Relations.

"We are in a situation now where both sides are escalating and its getting harder and harder to see how either side can gracefully climb down."

ADVISOR TO MURSI QUITS

Following a day of violence in Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said and Suez, the smell of tear gas hung over the capital's Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the uprising that toppled Mubarak in 2011 and the stage for more protests on Friday.

Youths clashed sporadically with police near the square, where activists camped out for a second day on Saturday, setting up makeshift barricades to keep out traffic.

Al-Masry Al-Youm, one of Egypt's most widely read dailies, hailed Friday's protest as "The November 23 Intifada", invoking the Arabic word for uprising.

But the ultra-orthodox Salafi Islamist groups that have been pushing for tighter application of Islamic law in the new constitution have rallied behind Mursi's decree.

The Nour Party, one such group, stated its support for the Mursi decree. Al-Gama'a al-Islamiya, which carried arms against the state in the 1990s, said it would save the revolution from what it described as remnants of the Mubarak regime.

Samir Morkos, a Christian assistant to Mursi, had told the president he wanted to resign, said Yasser Ali, Mursi's spokesman. Speaking to the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Morkos said: "I refuse to continue in the shadow of republican decisions that obstruct the democratic transition".

Mursi's decree has been criticized by Western states that earlier this week were full of praise for his role in mediating an end to the eight-day war between Israel and Palestinians.

"The decisions and declarations announced on November 22 raise concerns for many Egyptians and for the international community," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

The European Union urged Mursi to respect the democratic process.
